So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Did you ever wonder why the wind blows cold?
Did you ever realize your face is painted on my soul?
In between your whispers so sincere
I'll catch you when you fall
Through the eyes of broken innocence
I'd sell my heart for stones
Leave it all behind and fade away
To feel your purest blue
I can feel your purest blue, for you I must be strong
For I don't know right from wrong
Did you ever wonder why they all have gone away?
Did you ever realize that nothing changes, everything stays the same?
In between your whispers so sincere
I'll catch you when you fall
Through the eyes of broken innocence
I'd sell my heart for stones
Leave it all behind and fade away
To feel your purest blue
I can feel your purest blue, for you I must be strong
For I don't know right from wrong
Solo: Smyth
I will lay in the gentle hands of your controlling gaze
I will be your servant through your darkest days
I will make the sacrifice and change just for you
I will dive into the essence of your purest blue
In between your whispers so sincere
I'll catch you when you fall
Through the eyes of broken innocence
I'd sell my heart for stones
Leave it all behind and fade away
To feel your purest blue
I can feel your purest blue, for you I must be strong

This song is about a man who loves someone so much that it turns into an obssesion.

i love this song it just makes me feel so damn good on the inside
i can say that it is either obsession or he has found true love but the one he loves does not love back and he becomes a stalker
this is a love song he sings about someone he loves that left him but still is around as a friend or just someone that he sees around but the love is gone from her and he still loves her and wants her back and would do anything for her
Can someone tell me what he means by "Purest blue"?
To me, this actually sounds more like cocaine addiction than about a lost love or a stalker. With this idea in mind, the song title should be obvious.
"Did you ever realize your face is painted on my soul?" - Somewhat like the stalker theory, this could mean that the addiction of cocaine is "painted on his soul".
"In between your whispers so sincere" - This could mean in between highs.
"To feel your purest blue;I can feel your purest blue" - This could be a reference to the high itself, the "purest blue" being the euphoric state of detachment.
"for you I must be strong; For I don’t know right from wrong" - This could mean that he must be strong to keep his addiction fed, and that he doesn't know how to stop it.
"I will lay in the gentle hands of your controlling gaze;I will be your servant through your darkest days;I will make the sacrifice and change just for you" - He's being controlled by the addiction and the drug, and will do anything to feed his addiction.
Just a theory I have.
The "Purest blue" part could refer to the saying "true blue" as if he is yearning for his love's "true blue" affection. Beautiful song.
Probabbly my favorite song (so far) from Nevermore. Only reason why I say so far is i haven't listened too much by them yet. Song is very touching, makes me feel like I need to let go; let go of my grip on possessions, worries, reality, etc. etc.
it's an awesome song. I can relate to some of the lyrics because for the past 2 years I had strong feelings for a guy that recently moved away. I never told him, and maybe I should of, though, I always knew nothing would ever happen between us. Which sucked.
