They say this town,
The stars stay up all night,
Don't know can't see'em,
For the glow of the neon lights.
And it's a long way from here,
To the place where the home fires burn,
Well it's 2,000 miles and one left turn.
[chorus]
Dear Mom and Dad,
Please send money,
I'm so broke that it ain't funny.
I don't need much just enough to get me through.
Please don't worry 'cause i'm alright.
(i'm playin at the bar tonight)
This time i'm gonna make our dreams come true...
Well I love you more than anything in the world.
Love,
Your Baby Girl
Black top blue sky,
big town full of little white lies,
Everybody's your friend you can never be sure.
They'll promise fancy cars and diamond rings,
All sorts of shiny things.
Girl, you'll remember what your knees are for.
[repeat chorus]
I know that i'm on my way,
When I can tell every time I play.
And I know it's worth all the dues I pay,
When I can write to you and say...
Dear Mom and Dad,
I'll send money. I'm so rich that It ain't funny.
Well it oughtta be more then enough to get you through.
Please don't worry cause i'm alright,
I'm stayin here at the Ritz tonight,
Whatta ya know we made our dreams come true!
And there are fancy cars and diamond rings,
But you know that they don't mean a thing,
Well they all add up to nothin compared to you,
Well, remember me in ribbons and curls...
I still love you more than anything in the world
Love,
Your Baby Girl

I'm not a fan of country but for some reason I really enjoy this song. It shows that no matter what you do in life your parents always mean something to you.
the line about your knees is talking about having to grovel and beg for a break sometimes... it isn't easy in the music industry, and this song captures the lives of all the struggling artists out there, bartending, waitressing and trying to do shows and get the word out on them. Its everyone's dream in the industry to write home and not need the money anymore... I love this song seeing as I was one of those struggling a few years ago... makes me wish i hadn't given up
@.one.last.try. About "remembering what your knees are for," I think, means praying.

the song is all about hard work and how long and how hard she work to get to where she wanted to be... so the line "girl, you'll remember what your knees are for" has no sexual meaning about it what so ever, but is a term for hard work... like "I've been on my hands and knees all day bustin' my ass"... that's all it's saying... i know this cause my momma has been bustin' her ass for 20 years to make sure my brothers and i are taken care of... and now im just trying to return the favor... and to those of you who have both your parents in your life helping you out, don't take it for granted... it's a blessing and you should show your love and appreciation for them every chance you get because you only get one momma and pops... dueces
i don't know why, but this song stuck on me! it's a lil weird the first few times you hear it but it's one of my favorites now.
I know that i'm on my way, When I can tell every time I play.
I love this.
It's a good song but I don't understand the part about "Girl, you'll remember what your knees are for." Have sexually explicit lyrics (or sexually suggestive lyrics) made their way into Country Music now?
LOL, I thought of that, too. But it really means that she needs to work really hard to get all of the 'diamond rings and shiny things'. Like working on your knees, scrubbing the floors, you know?

@John Holmes I disagree with "benderover's" comments and agree with yours. I Do think this means that she has to submit to sexual favors on her knees in front of record producers to get what she wants. NOT scrubbing floors...........It's actually one of my all time favorite subliminal lines in music (along with about all of Meat Loaf's "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights" and Billy Joel's "Only the Good Die Young" lyrics)

@John Holmes as a kid I always thought of it as her being a vulnerable women in a strange place and remembering that if a man tried to make unwanted sexual advances towards her she could just jab him in the balls with her knee to get out of an unsafe situation.

However I do agree with both @Benderover and @Irish. Could have multiple implications depending on the person listening to it.

i honestly think that she says :"girl you'll remember what your needs are for." but thats just me i may be stupid but owell.
Haha, the knees line makes me laugh. I wonder if they knew it would be interpted like that when they (or Jennifer, not sure if it was a group effort).
I am not sure what the knees comment refers to. It could be the begging for favors and breaks. It could also imply praying.
The lyrics really do say "Girl you'll remember what your knees are for." This is a reference to praying to God and thanking him for everything that he gave you, such as your talent and will to continue on. It has no sexual connotations, and it is definitely not about begging. This can be proved by the lines before it telling her not to become distracted by the "shiny things" and gifts that people will offer her, but to stay true to her family morals and her beliefs.
@drummer_girl803 Nowhere does it say to "not to become distracted by shiny things".. It says "They promise fancy cars and diamond rings All sorts of shiny things" NOTHING about not being distracted so you can't interpret it this way. I really think the "knees" line pertains to the fact that she has to submit to sexual favors on her knees in front of record producers to get what she wants. (NOT scrubbing floors or praying.......but I guess that's why it's left open to interpretation.)

I think that the line "You'll remember what your knees are for" is going of both about Faith & Sexually suggestive. They're saying "Get down and pray", hoping that she won't use her knees for other things. you know? Just IMO.
I have to say, this is the song that got me hooked on Sugarland. I just love the up-beatiness of their songs...
It's about reaching thier dreams but still remembering the important things in life "And there are fancy cars and diamond rings, But you know that they don't mean a thing,"
