I think you guys might be overlooking some subtleties in the lyrics.
You're right that it's about making a decision to cut off a friendship, but I think that this friendship is plagued by some big problems. There's something going unsaid that is creating this rift between the two people, and it is going unsaid because both people care so much about the other that they can't bring themselves to say something that they both know will probably end the friendship.
It's like being friends with someone and hating their personality. It's just something that you can't overlook, but you try to overlook it because you value that friendship. Perhaps the person has changed since you knew them.
The singer is talking to the other person and saying, "Look, let's just put our cards on the table, because this is only going to hurt us more." He hates having to do it, but realizes that it's the right thing, hence "this is probably the best, not to mention the worst idea that I have ever had".

trying to walk away from something you think is good. then keep coming back to ask seriously how do you feel? And everytime it gets a little better and you just can't help but keep going back to ask the same question over and over again.
i think it's about being in love but having no other choice then to walk away. from the lyrics it sounds like there's still strong feelings of love...but the love for the other person just isn't strong enough to overpower the hurt the other person causes. when you're in love and you're hurting the first thing you try to do is forget. because that's the only thing we can do.
this song is about craig wanting to leave the band. he talked about it in his podcast with AP. i think anyone who is so positive about what it means is funny because youre not in his head, how can you be sure what he meant? theyre his lyrics and you can interpret them how you like but unless you hear it from whoever wrote them you cant really be sure what theyre about.
This is NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a break-up song. Craig wrote this song after a couple people quit the band right before Chiodos signed with Equal Vision records.....Craig thought the band was ending and he wrote this song about the feelings he had. I repeat....NOT a break-up song.

I think Chiodos was trying to portray that they've had a friendship or a relationship that they decided to walk away from. To ME, it means a lot because I can relate to these lyrics PERFECTLY. It's like they're the theme for situations I seem to be getting myself into. Great song, definitely.
