Song for a Friend Lyrics
well you're magic he said
but don't let it all go to your head
well i bet if you all had it all figured out
then you'd never get out of bed
Well no doubt
all the thing's that i've read what he wrote me
is now sounding like the man i was hoping
to be
keep on keeping it real
cause it keeps getting easier indeed
he's the reason that i'm laughing
even if there's no one else
he said, you've got to love yourself
you say, you shouldn't mumble when you speak
but keep your tongue up in your cheek
and if you stumble on to
you better remember that it's humble that you seek
you got all the skill you need,
individuality
you got something
call it gumption
call it anything you want
because when you play the fool now
you're only fooling everyone else
you're learning to love yourself
yes you are
there's no price to pay
when you give and what you take,
that's why it's easy to thank you
you...
let's say take a break from the day
and get back to the old garage
because life's too short anyway
but at least it's better then average
as long as you got me
and i got you
you know we'll got a lot to go around
i'll be your friend
your other brother
another love to come and comfort you
and i'll keep reminding
if it's the only thing i ever do
i will always love
i will always love you
yes you
i will always, always, always, always love
i will always, always love
i will always, always love, love
but don't let it all go to your head
well i bet if you all had it all figured out
then you'd never get out of bed
Well no doubt
all the thing's that i've read what he wrote me
is now sounding like the man i was hoping
to be
keep on keeping it real
cause it keeps getting easier indeed
he's the reason that i'm laughing
even if there's no one else
he said, you've got to love yourself
but keep your tongue up in your cheek
and if you stumble on to
you better remember that it's humble that you seek
you got all the skill you need,
individuality
you got something

call it anything you want

i think this is the best song on mr. a-z.
Jason said during a concert that he was trying to find a way to say thanks to his roomate, his bestfriend. A song for the guys, if you will, to express how they feel toward other men in a non-sexual way.
when the choir and him starts the lyrics are
climb up over the top survey the state of the soul you've got to find out for yourself whether or not you're truly tryin why not give it a shot shake it, take control and inevitably wind up findin for yourself all the strengths that you have inside of you
I read somewhere that Jason wrote this song about his father, and it makes sense- "all the thing's that i've read what he wrote me is now sounding like the man i was hoping to be" This is a great song- this whole album is amazing.
In a Dec 8th 05 interview with The Virginian-Pilot Jason responed this way to the song:
" Q. Are you aware you have a massive gay following?
A. I did have an idea, and I dig that. A lot of my friends are gay – my roommate, my manager. The last song on my album, “Song for a Friend,” was written for my roommate, Jerry. I felt it might be a great idea. … There’s always love songs for women, but there should also be a love song for two bros, whether or not you’re gay. I’ve always tried to be open to all things. So it doesn’t surprise me that the gay community digs the mu-sac , ’cause I am friends with the gay community. "
...and yes I am a big fan of the man!
i agree with trasta, my favortie song on mr. a-z aswell. I really want to know where he got like the insparation for this song, it seams to be about someone?
One of my favorites too! Here's what my dad and I guessed it was about, could be completely wrong, but we tried:
At first, we thought Jason Mraz was talking to himself in this song, someone was telling him he was "magic" and he didn't want to become to full of how well he was doing. Then I started to think it was about either Jason talking to a friend or a good friend helping Jason through a hard time. It sounds stupid, but I assumed Mraz was helping a friend get through depression, or a time where he was feeling unconfident...or had a low self-esteem. Someone's saying things to hurt this guy, and Jason's trying to tell him that we all have problems, don't let it go to your head, without problems we wouldn't have a reason to "get out of bed" every morning, this guys got a problem for bugging you and you've got a problem for listening to what he's saying. So without this guy around, it's getting "easier" and now that he can stand up for himself, he can laugh at this guy's problems. So no matter who bails out on you in life or what happens, you've always got one person, and if you don't love yourself, you will have absolutely nobody.
So now in the second verse the guy is getting over his depression or "hard time", so he shouldn't mumble when he speaks but keep your "tongue up in your cheek" as in, don't take yourself TOO seriously. He's telling this guy that he's got "all the skills he needs" and he's perfect just the way he is, he shouldnt feel bad about himself. So now with the help of this "friend" he's learning to love himself, he's fooling everyone else to believe that he's perfectly happy with himself, the first stage in TRULY having a high self-esteem.
Then he's saying he'll take a break from fame and luxory and go back to the "old garage" where everything he is now probably all started. I think he's now finding someone to enjoy himself with, someone who likes him for who he is and so now he can like himself too. He's got a friend now, someone to help him if he ever feels down, and Jason is there (or someone was there for Jason) to remind him that theywill always love him for who he is no matter what anyone else thinks.
Later when the choir deal comes in, they talk about like rising up, taking a chance, you've got nothing to lose, you never know how good you are until you really try...so I think that's like concluding this song and saying that with confidence and willing to try and go for things, you could get unexpected fortunes?
For all we know, this could be about a recording artist that really liked Jason's music, but thought he needed more confidence or something...sorry if this is completely wrong but this is how we saw it.
does anyone know the words when him and the choir sing?
I was told that he actually rocorded this with the choir from his old high school which i think is freakin awsome. :P
this song shows me not to give up on myself because there is always someone counting on you that hasnt given up on you yet.
