Respectable Street

A number of these lyrics are flat-out wrong, or was there a sanitized version for British radio or something? The version I know:

This song is a satirical commentary on high society. It's saying "these people think they're shit doesn't stink but in reality it stinks way worse than most people's shit"

yea upper-class jingoisms and how they suck

This isn't about upper class society, it's about middle class society.

The toffs don't give a toss about respectability. They're automatically respectable. That's why you get, say, Prince Harry punching photographers and showing up at a fancy dress party in a Nazi uniform.

The middle classes, on the other hand, are desperate to be respectable. Sometimes they're confused about exactly what that means, but that just makes them even more desperate to get it right. And pointing out your neighbors' failures is always the best way of hiding your own insecurity.

And that's life in the respectable suburbs, in a nutshell.

I think Americans don't get the upper/middle distinction, but it doesn't really matter, because the American suburban middle class still seems to act the same way.

While it is satirical, it is also the first "act" of the cosmic passion play that XTC is foretelling us of, in their entire discography.

This is the first song of the first timeline album, "Black Sea", which lays out the events that are in the here and now, through the end of the battle of Armageddon.

You always knew there was something in the songs of XTC that you just weren't getting, huh? Some deeper message that seemed too esoteric.

Me, too.

There are three timeline albums, with all of XTCs remaining albums, paralleling one of the three.

But, Wait! There's MORE!

The entire discography of XTC, plus their more veiled releases, as the " Dukes of Stratosphere " and "Plasticland" are also included.

In fact, the "Dukes" album, "Chips from the Chocolate Fireball" is the third timeline album, covering the time in future history, from the end of the "Age of Man" until the beginning of the next age, or "yuga" in the eastern time paradigm, of four cyclic "yugas".

The second timeline album is "English Settlement", and it covers from the end of the Armageddon, to the end of the " Age of Man" or Kali yuga, in telling us of things yet to occur.

There are two other inclusions in timeline.

The paisley underground band, "True West", have four albums that parallel the XTC timeline, with songs foretelling of events and occurances, yet to occur.

There is one more band, with a huge clue to the whole shebang. The "Hindu Love Gods" only released one single 45 rpm record. The band was made up of Pete Buck, Bill Berry, and Mike Mills, from R.E.M., and Warren Zevon. The A-side of the "Hindu Love Gods" (did you get that?) sole release, is the song,"Narrator"(how about that one?).

They told us of our future thirty some years ago.

The future they told us of, is in the here and now.

Respectable Street is referring to the snobby judgmental "haves" who the New World Order have enlisted to sell out their neighbors and friends. They have recruited right wing christian fundamentalist groups, including the Mormons and seventh day adventist sects, to "observe and report". There are other groups, too.

These " sheeple" have bought into a big lie, and will be subjugated right along with those they sold down the river.

The second song "generals and majors" is pretty self explanatory.

"Living through another Cuba", is very valid to the future, as if you listen to the lyrics, this song will tell you of the dark legacy that is behind all of the darkness in our future.
