Details of the War

I take this song quite literally, as it is how I can best relate to it. ;)

Starts off he's in love with this girl. Bloody sheets = she lost her virginity to him I think? That would be backed up with "Dying hard for love." She says he's "hurt" and a "wounded bird" yet she's the one who isn't happy unless she has money/nice clothes and her friends are the same way: fashionable whores.

So then Tom the Athlete (tm) asks her to the prom. They had sex after, but he's not surprised because everyone's the same. He sings that with such emptiness/hopelessness I love it. Anyhoo. Camel dick... I assume that means he had a big penis or something. I don't know the "crucifix" thing. So, as fashionable whores do, she left him for Tom the Athlete With the Bigger Penis (tm).

Our singer first realizes this when he sees him and her emerging from the football stands with his broken hand. It's over, he has seen it all before. (God I love that line)

So flash forward a bit and she's spending her life with him. She's not happy. The jock wasn't able to give her happiness, she tries to look good get him to notice her but he doesn't because all he does is drink.

Fucking jocks.

This song (with the exception of them loving each other first) is the story of my fucking life.

I had trouble with the "camel dick, crucifix" part but after thinking about it I think it's clear that its a play on the term "camel toe" = the guy is showing off his junk or is just that well endowed. He wears a crucifix like a lot of people do...

I find it interesting that no one has commented on the title line at the end: "BE CAREFUL WITH THE DETAILS OF THE WAR."

I had a lot of trouble with that one, but I have surmised that it is in regards to how ignorant Tom is; she can't talk about current events, etc. with him, just live the high life as trophy husband and wife.

For me it's a triubute to how laughable "perfect people" culture is. Everyone is uniform and everyone is shallow. And that is sick, right?

Every song on this album is great, but this and "Yellow Country Teeth" both stand out. This young band is going to be big, I think. There is a good review of this CD at www.pitchforkmedia.com

Agreed, I love these guys. They're playing a small venue near me, so I'm extremely happy.
