The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Sparks from the fire rise up to the sky
Higher and higher oh I want to fly
Out of the story this time I'll be free
Wake up for a moment from that dream of me
Just a legend cold word on a page
Lift up my eyes and I'm soaring away
On silver wings spread out to the sun
I'm leaving this city for the skies above.
Over the ruins an ancient light
Never lost, never failing
Follow me on my path to the heights
Before the shadows fade into night
Running back but I'm out of time.
I could tell everything
Hear the words that fill my mind
How can I say she was mine?
Higher and higher oh I want to fly
Out of the story this time I'll be free
Wake up for a moment from that dream of me
Just a legend cold word on a page
Lift up my eyes and I'm soaring away
On silver wings spread out to the sun
I'm leaving this city for the skies above.
Over the ruins an ancient light
Never lost, never failing
Follow me on my path to the heights
Before the shadows fade into night
Running back but I'm out of time.
I could tell everything
Hear the words that fill my mind
How can I say she was mine?

I agree with Skez. I also agree with Yomino332, I found this song to sound strange at first, but after hearing it a few times, the vocals grew on me. Mr. Goo's voice reminds me of the lead singer from Rhapsody!
