Meaning In Tragedy Lyrics
i have traveled so far to find so little
meaning in tragedy or tragedy
in the search for meaning
dark clouds have lead me here
confined freedom
guides us to security
what if everything
i have been taught is a lie
and all of my teachers
have been wrong this whole time
compelling us to fight
the battles they would not
they have already won
and we have already lost
if we do not learn from their mistakes
we have already lost
if we do not learn to change
meaning in tragedy or tragedy
in the search for meaning
dark clouds have lead me here
confined freedom
guides us to security
what if everything
i have been taught is a lie
and all of my teachers
have been wrong this whole time
compelling us to fight
the battles they would not
they have already won
and we have already lost
if we do not learn from their mistakes
we have already lost
if we do not learn to change

I think this song is about life. You get born in a thin line you have to live, take the interests others teach you as your own and get taught an opinion. "confined freedom guides us to security"
righteous one ollo aild. i took the song differently. i have traveled so far to find so little meaning in tragedy or tragedy in the search for meaning dark clouds have lead me here i thought this was like how people search for, well, meaning in tragedy. people tend to ask during times of peril why did this happen. when people pass, friends and realitives may ask," how did god let this happen?" people search and often times they find an answer not what they are looking for. turning searching for meaning in tradgedy to tradgedy in the search for meaning. Dark clouds have lead me here may mean that sadness has lead me to this point. usually in cartoons and whatnot, dark, rainy clouds have represented sadness, pain and agony. so thats what i thizzizzought. may be wrong. the rest of the song puzzles me.
Perhaps he's questioning his faith in God because of losing someone close. He is wondering whether there is in fact, this "meaning in tragedy" that so many clergy will claim. "it was part of God's plan" is basically what this questions.
This is a badass song!!!!!!!! but anyone think this song's (not truth of my perception lol) main riff sound kinda like "Through The Darkest Nights"?
I play guitar, know pretty much all the riffs, they KIIINDA sound similar, but they're nothing alike when you actually see the notes or learn how to play them. Meaning in Tragedy is 10000 times more complicated. Darkest Nights is one of their simpler songs.

im not sure, but i think this song has something to do with being more open minded and questioning what youre taught.
The first part ('i have travelled......have lead me here') i think could link with the second part. as i lay dying being a christian band they could be talking about questioning your teachers about telling you there is an afterlife and all the 'meaning in tragedy' stuff.
i think the second part could be a political thing but its a bit vague to be sure. maybe the 'compellng us to fight the battles' bit is something to do with questionning the leaders before acting on what they say, which would link in with the open minded thing.
Man, this song has more meaning to me than you guys can know. I just want to say its too bad we couldn't be better friends Jared. I'm sorry I couldn't tell you who I really was. It's my fault for trying to fit in and being a bad ass. Jared Durant 1985-2006.
I think the song means this: going your own way from God is getting nothing. has tragedy happend for a reason or a result? Sin has led me to ask this question. If we fallow what we are suppose to do we will be better off. Is what we have been told to follow not a reality and trying to follow this impossible because even our teachers have failed? The enemy has already won and we have already lost if we do not learn from our teachers who have made mistakes; we have lost unless we change our ways.
I Really like what ourmodernred said, It is exactly the way I am feeling.
Something from one of P.O.D.s songs that i think goes with this message "Look to the sky head the warning, the shadow is coming, the shadow is coming."
I think it is time for us to change.
Of corse this would only make sence if you think As I Lay Dying writes from a christian perspective.
This song makes me think of 9/11.. looking for meaning in why it happened and such.. then it goes to "dark clouds have lead me here".. makes me think of the smoke from the towers. no relation at all to the actual meaning. "confind freedom guides us to security".. like has been said, when freedoms are limated, we feel more secure. (Like after 9/11, and recently the London events.) By limating what people can do, it makes them feel safer. Also the name of the album goes with this, "Shadows are Security." George Carlin also wrote about limated freedom makes people feel secure in one of his books.
political song, questions a lot.. absolutly amazing song
Is it just me.. or did that Jared Guy kill himself?
our modern red
the band is a christian band so thats sounds pretty logical
