Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
A man walks out of his apartment
It is raining
He's got no umbrella
He starts running beneath the awnings
Trying to save his suit
Trying to save his suit
Tryin' to dryin' to tryin' to dry but no good
When he gets to the crowded subway platform
He takes off both of his shoes
He steps right into somebody's fat loogie
And everyone who sees him says "ew"
Everyone who sees him says "ew"
But he doesn't care
Cause last night he got a visit
From the ghost of corporate future
The ghost said take off both your shoes
Whatever chances you get
Especially when they're wet
He also said
Imagine you go away on a business trip one day
And when you come back home
Your children have grown and you never made your wife moan
You children have grown and you never made your wife moan
And people make you nervous
You'd think the world was ending
And everybody's features have somehow started blending
And everything is plastic
And everyone's sarcastic
And all your food is frozen
It needs to be defrosted
You'd think the world was ending
You'd think the world was ending
You'd think the world was ending right now
Well maybe you should just drink a lot less coffee
And never ever watch the ten o'clock news
Maybe you should kiss someone nice
Or lick a rock
Or both
Maybe you should cut your own hair
Cause that can be so funny
It doesn't cost any money
And it always grows back
Hair grows even after you're dead
People are just people
They shouldn't make you nervous
The world is everlasting
It's coming and it's going
If you don't toss your plastic
The streets won't be so plastic
And if you kiss somebody
Then both of you'll get practice
The world is everlasting
Put dirtballs in your pockets
Put dirtballs in your pockets
And take off both your shoes
Cause people are just people
People are just people
People are just people like you
The world is everlasting
It's coming and it's going
The world is everlasting
It's coming and it's going
It is raining
He's got no umbrella
He starts running beneath the awnings
Trying to save his suit

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

just beautiful.
i just got this song in a mix. and i had woken up at 6am last night and couldnt go to sleep, thinking and.. being flooded with caffiene..anyways... this song came on shuffle.. and god i just love those songs that fit your current situation. Just the thing you needed to hear. I repeat the lines "people are just people they shouldn't make you nervous" because for some odd reason I get completely terrified when I have to be alone with a person, There's so much pressure to entertain and be giddy, it just makes me a little uneasy thinking about, however I manage to survive and people would actually assume I was extremely social. But for some reason I hold some people so high above me, sometimes I myself don't feel all that human so it's hard for me to understand others.uhm so i guess this song is a little chant for me to remember that people are just people just like..you.. or... me. also... i uhm.. im 18 and am afraid to kiss a boy..i have had many oppurtunities.. but gah put so much pressure on myself to be this nonhuman persona of being likable that simple things that i could possibly be bad at scare me. uh breathe. damn you breathe. anyways.. the line "you should kiss nice people" I need to get over my fear issues..and maybe this is the song to help me do it. Im just thankful for this song and sort of in need of a rant. Im just tired of hearing beautiful things like this song and then seeing that some people don't get effected by it.. or anything.. they just continue, which diminishes my pursuit...anyways.. I didnt really have anyone to talk to, I have friends.. but people can't help fully, being afraid theyll fall into your slump. ay ay ay. im just tired. i like this song.... lol..lol. =)
