On The Mend Lyrics

One more day that I've survived
Another night alone
Pay no mind I'm doing fine
I'm breathing on my own

I'm here
And I'm on the mend
I'm here
And I'm on the mend my friend

Wake me when the hour arrives
Wake me with my name
See you somewhere down the line
We're tethered once again

I'm here
And I'm on the mend
I'm here
And I'm on the mend my friend

I'm here
And I'm on the mend
I'm here
And I'm on the mend my friend

Was it you?
Sat alone
Here we go

Close your eyes and stay a while
To take me where you go
Single file we walk the mile
Who's wandering back home

I'm here
And I'm on the mend
I'm here
And I'm on the mend my friend

I'm here
And I'm on the mend
I'm here
And I'm on the mend my friend

Was it you?
Sat alone
Here we go
Here we go
Here we go
Here we go

I think this song is about being in hospital and the guy is in a coma or summit. that'swhy he says "Wake me with my name". as people in comas often respond when they hear a name. (I said Respond, not wake)

Dave wrote this song when Taylor Hawkins, Foo's drummer, was hospitalized from an OD' and Dave was very worried about him and he loved like a brother, So you are on the right track.

@phoenix818 @ark417 I like this theory; that it's the thoughts that the person in the coma is having while people are visiting their bedside. Like they're screaming, "I'm here! I'm here!"

Here's what Dave said about this song in an interview...

"'On The Mend' is kind of old, it's an older track that was written probably four years ago or something like that. It was written in London. I wrote it sitting in a hotel room."

lovely song...I´ve listened it today for many times... it´s extremely tender, like the great and pure songs, without pretensions.. I think It tells, the life of a normal anonymous person strugging in his/her life..hard work, loneliness but with a little piece of hope . "Here we go" You are not alone,my friend,we will help you.. Probably dedicated to some anonymous friend of one member of the band maybe Dave´s one ;)

it's kinda' funny, I think it feels like this song is a response to the song right before it, "Over and Out". I'm sure it's not even supposed to be that way, but to me, it seems like the chorus is what the person wanted to hear on the radio on the song before it.

This is one of my favorites on the acoustic CD. So mellow, and the chorus is haunting and calming.

Amazing song to listen to at night.

Coma theory is interesting. Probably is supposed to sound like that but as a metaphor. Though it might not even be that complicated - Dave Grohl always insists on the simplicity of his lyrics.

Beautiful song, fabulous guitar work. Love the instrumental outro that plays the song out, with it's rising harmonies and clever use of rhythmic syncopation. Brilliant.

Second only to 'Razor' on the acoustic CD.

I agree, the music is so beautiful and relaxing - and almost haunting - that I don't really care what the lyrics mean.

I don't know what it's about. But I love it. And it makes me feel like. . . I don't know. Like Dave just sat up in his room one night and wrote it. About how he was just sort of chillin' and changin'. About how he was doing fine. Simple. Breathing. Taking time to breathe. . . at least, thats how I feel. This is my favorite song of all time. . .

I think it's about losing a girl. "One more day that I've survived another night alone. Pay no mind I'm doin' fine, breathing on my own." You tell the girl not to worry that you'll make it and you don't want her to feel sorry in any way. "Wake me when the hour arrives..." When you come around and realize I'm meant for you, let me know.

For me it's just about trying to make it on your own but all the while knowing that when that person comes around you'll fall for her again... "See you somewhere down the line we're teathered once again."

After reading Dave's comments, now when I listen to this song I just have a vision of Dave sitting alone in some hotel room in London staring out a window overlooking the city singing this song. To me it seems like it's about looking back on a rough patch in our lives and realizing that we've survived it. I think it's a song about healing and letting go or realizing that you have healed and let go.
