Jack, believe it or not, is straight forward. He doesn't try extremely hard to be clever or to hide things. Sometimes you just have to know what he likes and what he does. I truly believe this song is purely about sex and the reflection upon the part of her personality that tells her not to put out. I think it's that simple. It's the blues.

wow, i got the cd and this song is the first one that jumped out at me. this song has the intensity and emotion of old rock- real rock. i'm not exactly positively sure what it means tho... i've only listened to the cd twice all the way through (but htis song like 10 times already). my guess is that there's an unspoken "secret" going around, and everyone can see it, but the person this song is written about. and he just wants her to see, so he doesn't have to say anything.( ya my guess is it's about a girl)

This song is about how people think too hard about their own existence, while the "lesser" animals understand their existence instinctually.

In this song in particular, yes, cherry is right, he wants the girl not to think so hard about it, just to do what feels natural, because then he'll get laid.

Honestly, when I first listened to this song I loved the guitar, and only later listened to the lyrics, then was blown away again. twice by the same song! I wish Jack White would use his guitar more, rather than the xylophone and piano he uses a lot on this album.

I dont think it's just about sex. I think it's also about how most humans are completely out of sync with their true nature. We eat food that wasn't made for us. We don't breathe deeply. We sit in little cubicles and classrooms bathing in artificial sunlight. Meanwhile all the plants and animals do exactly what they need to to survive with no questions asked.

You DON'T GET IT! The majority of human beings would not get it, because they live their life superficially. When you live on the surface level of appearances, you never dive deep. You need to know a little about Jack's background to come even close to getting it.

candy cane child, i agree with you, this song DEFINITELY stands out among the otehr on Get Behind Me Satan...it's really one of the only truly rocking songs...this is straight blues here, it's really an excellent song.

I think its about how Jack is frustrated with someone (probably a girl), and he relates it to nature. He says how it is instinctive (hence the title) that almost everything in nature gets 'it', and he can't understand why his girl can't 'get with it', and he's fed up

Maybe he's mocking her out, calling her an idiot? That would be a nice homage to Dylan's 'Idiot Wind'

Sounds like some girl won't put out and the guy's pissed. God, I wish they would do more songs like this. Their blues songs keep me sane.

I'm going to have to agree with Cherry-- hey, it's instinct! every other animal does it, so why don't you? heh

I think this song is about our basic needs, and how much we forget or ignore our instincts for these. That whole "animal magnitism" thing... that is our instincts drawing us to someone. If we ignore that, we are really ignorring something that is natural and instrinsic to us as living beings.

i think this song is just about how instincts just take over us. how every one just needs to fuck sometimes but sometimes theres n o one to fuck so you get desprite and instinct cause you to do thing you'll regret
