Til Kingdom Come Lyrics

Steal my heart and hold my tongue
I feel my time, my time has come
Let me in, unlock the door
I've never felt this way before

And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummer begins to drum
I don't know which way I'm going
I don't know which way I've come

Hold my head inside your hands
I need someone who understands
I need someone, someone who hears
For you, I've waited all these years

For you I'd wait 'til kingdom come
Until my day, my day is done
And say you'll come and set me free
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me

In your tears and in your blood
In your fire and in your flood
I hear you laugh, I heard you sing
I wouldn't change a single thing

And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummers begin to drum
I don't know which way I'm going
I don't know what I'll become

For you I'd wait 'til kingdom come
Until my days, my days are done
And say you'll come and set me free
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me

Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me

I think this song is beguiling.

I interpret this song as an enormous, emotionally bursting love for someone that can barely be expressed with only words. This person is saying that he will wait, 'til kingdom come' until 'my day is done.' showing an unfaltering passion.

'For you I've waited all these years.'

He also says to 'just say you'll wait', 'for me' over and over. Just wait for me. That's all he wants in return; for this love to be reciprocated. I believe this is because a relationship, or when there's any other sense of passion between two people, being told that we will be waited for is a huge sense of affection, love and even respect. As humans if someone tells us they will wait for us, it immediately brings a sense of happiness and devotion for that person. The song takes that mentality to the level of love and relationships. The person in the song believes that if someone tells them they will wait for him, that's about as happy as he can be.

"For you i'd wait til kingdom come." "Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me."

A little extra about this song. Right before the CD came out, Coldplay had a special on MTV where they played all the songs on the album and chatted about what each song was about. When Chris was talking about this one, along with the fact that he had written the song to be performed by Cash, he said that this was one of the few songs he'd written that obviously wasn't about a girl. Not to say anyone's wrong for thinking it's about two lovers; it can mean whatever you want it to mean, but it seems like Chris' focus in this song is his spirituality.

@angrynerdrock287 nearly 15 years later, thanks for this extra tidbit. When I listened to this entire album as a college kid, most songs seemed to be about Chris singing to/about a lover, or to/about the listener. Now, after years of yoga, meditation, breath work (i.e. spiritual practice), the album portrays a powerful message of awakening, and one's relationship to the deepest parts of oneself, and our infinite relationship to God that resides inside. The fact that the interpreter can hear the songs in both ways shows how mature, intelligent, and aware Coldplay's lyrics are. Absolutely fantastic. I love Parachutes and...

Wow. A lot of different interpretations of the song which are all interesting and thought-provoking. After first hearing this song, it is a song that I really wish I heard Johnny Cash sing because it awesomely depicts his love for June Carter. If this is a song dedicated to Johnny Cash, here's why.

June was everything to Johnny Cash and in a lot of ways, she was the person who saved him. I can see him singing this song reminiscing about his feeling towards June during the latter parts of his years. There was a time when he was lost. He was lost for a long while due to his addictions. They plagued for many years and June was there to help him in the end. She was the reason he cleaned up. She was his life. When he saw June, there was "The One." He had to be with her and could not live without her. June died in May of 2003 and Johnny died September of 2003, just four months later. I can hear Johnny asking June to wait to enter the Kingdom with him and I like to think that she did.
