Girlfriend Is Better (Stop Making Sense version) Lyrics
I...Who took the money?
Who took the money away?
I...It's always showtime
Here at the edge of the stage
O - U - T But no hard feelings
What do you know? Take you away
We're being taken for a ride again
I got a girlfriend that's better than that
She has the smoke in her eyes
She's moving up, going right through my heart
She's gonna give me surprise
Better than this, know that it's right
I think you can if you like
I got a girlfriend with bows in her hair
And nothing is better than that (Is it?)
Down, down in the basement
We hear the sound of machines
I...I'm driving in circles
Come to my senses sometimes
Why, why, why, why start it over?
Nothing was lost, everything's free
I don't care how impossible it seems
Somebody calls you but you cannot hear
Get closer to be far away
Only one look and that's all that it takes
Maybe that's all that we need
All that it takes, all that it takes
All that it takes, all it takes
I got a girlfriend that's better than that
And she goes wherever she likes (There she goes...)
I got a girlfriend that's better than that
Now everyone's getting involved
As we get older and stop making sense
You won't find her waiting long
Stop making sense, stop making sense...stop making sense, making sense
I got a girlfriend that's better than that
And nothing is better that this ( is it? )
Who took the money away?
I...It's always showtime

I want one of David Byrnes' Big Suits.
This song is about the interpersonal struggle of a man during a night of dancing and sexual intercourse with a woman of which he is not dating. The "girlfriend" refers to the woman he is dating. He goes through a multitude of thought processes questioning whether his real relationship will exist post experience and trying to convince himself that "this" is a good idea. Kinda like a my mind is telling me no but my body is telling me yes thing. Cheat on your girlfriend at a concert and then listen to this song. It starts making sense, starts making sense... Trust me.
I love the phrase "Stop Making Sense" ... It means that sometimes you gotta stop asking questions, stop wondering, because sometimes you've got to feel things, feel what they mean to you, and not what they mean in objective sense. A song, like everything in life, has to be felt and absorbed, not understood. If you think about it, for exemple sometimes you don't understand the meaning of some lyrics, but you love the song the same. In fact, love isn't rational. It's an emotional and feeling thing... That's why I'm so romantic.
I think the comment in most songs like this is that this concept of love that (in this case) requires the expulsion of rational, honest thought is an unfortunate thing.

I love this song but I can't hear it without an image of David Byrne in his big suit appearing in my mind.
The big suit. :)
The big suit. :)
I'm a huge Talking Heads fan, and I love this song. For those trying to read depe meaning into this song, I read a quote from Mr. Byrne that said something to the effect of "I started out writing a song about money, and ended up writing a song about something else."
It reminds me of Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.
but i think it was written before Fight Club, so obviously David Byrne can see into the future.
1) This site is song meanings not "songs I love". So your comments of "I love this" are just not adding value to the discussion, but thanks for letting us know. 2) This is the shiiittt - how about you express yourself with eloquence and elegance rather than 'spring break style' shouting, you will find you are suddenly far more capable of influencing and engaging people. 3) The singers name is not John Bryne. 4) The lyrics about bows are more likely to be about childhood innocence or the fashion of the 50s (think Grease) than paedophilia. Paedophilia was a word that was almost never used at the time of writing the song, and people did not think that way back then. Paedophilia is very much a 2010s 2020s consideration even though such crimes have long been committed. 5) "This song is about" is definitive, so it is worth backing it up with a reference to where you heard Bryne say so. Or try saying "I think" or "To me this means" or "It might be". 6) The years between when Fight Club was written and this song produced (there were many), and Chuck was a teenager at the time this was written.
This site can be a great resource.
I went to the rock and roll hall of fame in cleveland..and there it was..the big white fucking suit! (and I have NO idea what this song means, hehe)
Love this song, it's the best to dance to!
I also believe he was writing about life on the road, with girls. I want to try to dissect the lyrics line by line. Byrne is writing about various aspects of relationships with women, that many people experience. Granted some lines are more metaphorical and hard to translate than others but I hope you all will understand what I'm talking about.
"Who took the money away?" - Referring to a woman or girlfriend who has either stolen their partner's cash, or what you ask yourself after a break-up, and wonder why you spent so much money on her
"Always showtime, here at the edge of the stage" - describing the excitement and spontaneity of entering a new relationship
"What was the place, what was the name" - meeting a new girl and can't remember where you met her or what her name was
"We want to wait but here we go, again" - deciding when you should call her back but then just ending up calling her too soon, or wanting to withhold from sex because she is a "keeper" but you can't resist
"Takes over slowly, but doesn't last very long" - Love takes a while to develop but then is over before you know it
"No need to worry, everything's under control" - convincing yourself the relationship is still in good terms; Byrne was a very awkward man so it could mean trying to keep yourself together on a nervous date
"o-u-t, but no hard feelings" - Getting dumped, but she wants to be friends and is sorry
"What do you know, take you away, we're being taken for a ride again" - the "trip" a girlfriend can take you on
Chorus "I got a girlfriend.....and nothing is better than that" - represents the care-free attitude that you have when you are in love in a relationship, for nothing seems to be a important/good as that
"Down in the basement......come to my senses sometimes" - ?
"Why start it over? Nothing is lost, Everythings Free" - At times in a turbulent relationship people wish they could just start over with a clean slate, but there is no use wanting that, because it cant happen
"Somebody calls you and you cannot hear" - Having your head in the clouds when you are in a great relationship
"Get closer to be far away" - Many ex-couples don't communicate with each other anymore, which is ironic since they were so close together, and now so far away
"Only one look and that's all that it takes" - Love at first sight
"Maybe that's all that we need" - "
"She goes wherever she likes, there she goes" - referring to a girl's need to be independent even in a serious relationship, which can put the man in turmoil, but the fact that he has a girlfriend makes up for her wrong doings
"Now everyone's gettin involved" - Everyone wants to know how you all are in the relationship and what you guys are doing, very realistic reference imo
"going right through my heart, we might not ever get caught" - Referring to the mischief you can get into with her
"and you don't remember at all" - you had a lot of fun in the relationship, but now that its over it seems so far away and cant remember the good times as well
"As we get older and stop making sense, you won't find her waiting long" - Refers to how easily a girl can become bored in the relationship and leaving whenever she wants. She often doesn't have time to wait for her spouse
The Stop making sense lyric can be interpreted any way you like. Stop making sense of what she is doing, because you may be wasting your time. Apparently Byrne said he started writing a song about money and started writing a song about something else. Well that is what the song is about. A girlfriend is better than money. She took the money away. He is writing random traits of women and relationships throughout the song that don't really follow any order (of a relationship), but then again when does any Talking Heads song have a concrete "order". This song is brilliant, and it is scary to me how much I can relate to this song. I hope you can too, let me know what you think of my interpretation
@LeoMessi427 this is one of my favorite Talking Heads songs, and I had always wondered what some of the lines could possibly mean. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your fascinating and creative interpretation. It totally makes sense to me and even though you posted 5 years ago, I just wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate your interpretation and thought it was really great! :) thanks!
