The Libertine Lyrics
The motorway won't take a horse.
The wanderer has found a course to follow.
The traveller unpacked his bags for the last time.
The troubadour cut off his hand and now he wants mine,
(Oh, no )
Oh no, not me.
The circus girl fell off her horse, now shes paralysed.
The hitchiker was bound and gagged, raped on the roadside.
The libertine is locked in jail.
The pirate sunk and broke his sail.
But I still have to go,
I've got to go, so here I go,
I'm gonna run the risk of being free.
The magicians secrets all revealed.
And the preachers lies are all concealed.
And all our heroes lack any conviction.
They shout through the bars of cliche and addiction.
So I've got to go,
I've got to go, so here I go
I'm gonna run the risk of being free.
And in this drought of truth and invention, whooever shouts the loudest gets the most attention, so we pass the mic and they've got nothing to say except:
Bow down, bow down, bow down to your god.
Then we hit the floor, and make ourselves and idol to bow before.
Well I can't,
And I won't
Bow down,
Anymore...
No more.

How no one has commented on this song, I don't know. It's probably the most main-stream Patrick Wolf song but it just kicks so much arse.
How someone can combine classical folk with electronica and some gothic imagery a la Tom Waits or Jeff Buckley I have no clue. But it sounds so fucking good.
I like the ending. The perfect atheist's anthem on first glance, but it's referring to all the crap that fills the airwaves these days. Patrick is saying he's not going to fall into that category and is going to be a libertine, rebel against the majority and do his own thing. I admire him for that. :)
I love when the strong beat comes in after the intro.
Fucking amazing song.
well patrick wolf is hot!
this is my favorite part of the song:

basically the whole second half
I absolutely love this song. Wind in the Wires is easily my favorite album from Patrick. This song is so beautifully haunting and yet it stil has an amazing beat. I think I can honestly say that I have never heard a Patrick Wolf song that i didn't like.
i always thought it was "the traveller unpacked his bags full of lost time" but i guess not. xD
this song and bluebells are both so dark and kind of creepy, and then you listen to the magic position and you're like WHAT good good good song
As in.. he's going to try and bring good music back to the charts. I heard he was moderately successful with this.
I love this song to no end.
Nice song, especially about the synth string part just after the end of the refrain. Interesting words, but not that much, honestly :-/. It's all about the same story: be free, no god, etc..
it is a very mainstream song, but people who dislike mainstream music because its mainstream are just as lame as people who like it for the same reason
like music because it moves you, or is good, or brings back memories, but not because it is popular, or obscure.
that being said,
its a great song, and has some intresting imagery, but i think it is a bit cliche.
the musical part is great, its in a minor key, but manages not to sound overly dark while in it. i like it
I agree about the mainstream thing.
I agree about the mainstream thing.
Oh wow.. I just heard this song... it's awesome... and I agree with Yttrium.. don't like a song or a band because your friend does or because it's mainstream.. music is a way of life now.. bands and singers write music that moves them and hopes it moves the fans just as much.
