Detroit Has a Skyline Lyrics
As soon as I got home
Reached out for the foam
Drank my sleep from a can
Playing track 6 and track 7 again and again
I had a crush
Nothing works out
Well I had faith
Could not have known; don't even say it
Meet me again, maybe one mile high
Meet me again and I won't flake this time
Meet me again, maybe a year from now
Meet me again, I think we both remember how
It was no architect designed this view
He could not have known about you
Mousy homes, catacombs
Detroit has a skyline too
Detroit has a skyline too
I had a crush
Nothing works out
Well I had faith
Could not have known, so don't even say it
Meet me again, maybe one mile high
Meet me again and I won't flake this time
Meet me again, maybe a year from now
Meet me again, I think we both remember how
I think we both remember how

My interpretation is that it's about a guy who screws up a relationship when he becomes infatuated by another woman because of her "skyline." When it doesn't work out, he realizes that his original lover had everything he saw in the other woman.
It's kind of a grass-is-always-greener analogy.
I have certainly made such moronic choices in my life so the song resonates for me. I love it.
My only question is what songs are tracks six and seven?

i can't believe no one's commented on this song yet. it's amazing.
i've only heard the version on "cup of sand," but ever since the first listening, i'm blown away by the emotion of the lead singer's voice as he rants these simplistic, begging lyrics to his audience.
it's pretty self-explanatory; it's about fucking up a relationship (possibly due to chasing after another person you thought was worth it) but wanting to get back together and try to work things out.
i'm just now getting into superchunk. and i likes what i hears. -xo, tyler.
i got into this from brendan leonard too!! glad i'm not the only one haha i also love the lone winters..oh good ol brendan.
I heard the acoustic version first and fell in love with it. Then I got Here's Where The Strings Come In and heard the electric version, which I like about a billion times more. The acoustic version is for when I'm sad and the album version is for when I feel like going crazy. True love.
oh wow, i cant believe that there are so little comments too. i'm just learning about superchunk, i heard a cover of this song by jesse lacey and fell in love with it, i gotta check out more of their songs
not only is he a singer for an awesome band (brand new), jesse lacey has awesome taste in music. i mean the dude has covered songs by modest mouse, built to spill, neutral milk hotel, and these guys. i dont see how people could possibly hate the guy

Another one of those bands I discovered watching the Brendan Leonard Show, like The Lone Winters and Built to Spill.
This is such a sad song, for many reasons
i mean the long winters
what do the song lyrics have to do with detroit?
haha, i think it's more the idea. the song title is "detroit has a skyline" which explains itself really. even a place as grimy and dark as detroit has a skyline. so i'm sure you can stencil that idea onto his situation

But you'd expect a grimy place to have a skyline because it's a big city. The analogy works better I think if he thought Detroit was a small unknown city before finding out that it has a skyline.

First off, Mac is the lyricist, and generally the song writer in general; however, he gives credit to all his band mates for their musical contributions in creating their parts. I'm glad people are rediscovering this band. To me, they WERE the 90's (and beyond). Anyway, I really feel like you guys have had some really good thoughts as to what this song is about. When he says "I had a crush but nothing works out," it just rips me apart. One of these days, when I see them in concert again, I'll ask Mac what album track 6 and 7 are from.
Yeah, hahaha...I was always curious about what those tracks are?

@joe1133247 I would love to know as well, although a part of me is happy with it being track 6 & 7 from Here's Where the Strings Come in, "Detroit Has a Skyline" and "Eastern Terminal," which along with track 8, "Animated Airplanes Over Germany" will always and forever be my favorite in-flight soundtrack.

I have a different interpretation. I think it's plainly about having a crush on someone, maybe a fling, but ultimately the other person rejects you as a partner because they don't think you meet their standards. He's obviously distraught over the rejection, but he refuses to feel worthless about himself over it. Detroit, mousy homes, and catacombs are the singer describing himself as a humble type, not very polished or attractive as a partner. But he thinks he has a skyline, or desirable qualities, if the other person could just see it. Maybe the timing isn't right in their lives at that point so he wants them to try it again in a year.
