I like to think this song's about war and the senseless killing involved in it.

@littlejohn062 good analysis. I agree that it gives an impression of him feeling helpless after the loss of a friend (possibly because of suicide). It all points to him wishing that he could have helped, could have stopped them etc. etc. but in the end it was futile.
