North Hanging Rock Lyrics
Drape yourself in greenery
Become part of the scenery
Ever since time immemorial
It's all stored up in chemicals
Witness the demolition of boy in prime condition, oh
Into the dusk, we will descend
I hope and pray that this won't end
So say goodbye to everybody
Tell them all I am so sorry
Oh, I wish I could have said goodbye
What else could I do?
What else could I do?
Drape yourself in greenery
Become part of the scenery
Into the past, we'll all descend
We'll hope and pray that it won't end
Drape yourself in greenery
Become part of the sceney
Oh drape yourself in greenery
Become part of the sceney
Become part of the scenery
Ever since time immemorial
It's all stored up in chemicals
Witness the demolition of boy in prime condition, oh
Into the dusk, we will descend
I hope and pray that this won't end
So say goodbye to everybody
Tell them all I am so sorry
Oh, I wish I could have said goodbye
What else could I do?
Become part of the scenery
Into the past, we'll all descend
We'll hope and pray that it won't end
Become part of the sceney
Oh drape yourself in greenery
Become part of the sceney

Maybe there is some correlation to be made with Peter Weir's "Picnic at Hanging Rock," wherein a group of schoolgirls disappear into the Australian bush during a picnic, presumably the result of some kind of powerful natural magic. The idea of two lovers trying to absorb themselves into the landscape to escape their problems is particularly appealing to me.
I really like the connection to Picnic at Hanging Rock. I don’t know that is what the song is about, but I kind of want it to be.

Like I did with Poison Oak (Bright Eyes) and Proof (Coldplay), I teared up when this song came on for the first time. The tune is perfect to get this point across.
It's obvious there is a drug reference here. "Witness the demolition of a boy in prime condition" really sums up the use of drugs in teens these days.
"Tell them all I am so sorry/Oh, I wish I could have said goodbye" may be a suicide note, like he couldn't take it anymore.
I really think this song deserves more comments. BSP is just a magnificent band. I am in love with them.
reductionism can only be conquered by immersing in nature
drugs are cool because if you take drugs people will think that you are cool
It's all about suicide.
@Young Team suicide is one of many others things this song can be interpreted into.......with me its mental health which can lead too suicide if someones negative mental health is not helped.......anyway I send the writer of this comment good wishes even though its very late

Yeah - put those two ideas together from above - disappearing into the landscape, like in Picnic At Hanging Rock, through drugs, magic, suicide, in a bearsuit, on a magic carpet etc etc etc. Having a Magic Eye moment.
I think it's about people nullifying themselves with different type of medication. It reminiscent of Blackout in that respect.
Could it not be about burying a friend or family member, who for some reason died before their time, perhaps as a result of something the writer did (or didn't do)?
Wishing he could say goodbye because he wasn't there, being sorry because there was something (or nothing) he could have done. I've never heard of this Hanging Rock as a place I figured it referred to a headstone (which also becomes part of the scenery)
for me this song is about hiding your real feelings to blend with society....with me its mental illness...i've suffered with anxiety for many years and maybe i've tried too blend in too much in my life ....and when you blend in too much and not show your true feelings then this is very damaging....hence the lyrics drape yourself in greenery etc......its all about metaphors like many bsp songs....and mostly they will use nature as a metaphor for the subject they are singing about.....and this metaphor can be interpreted into many different things....mine happens to be my mental health and my...

This seems pretty straight-forward: suicide. It's a beautiful, haunting song.
@LucasCorso Years later . . . I’m considering other possibilities.

Actually, I think it’s “ever since time memorial.” I think it is a play on the phrase “since time immemorial.” The line is followed by “it’s all stored up in chemicals,” which in this context I think refers to a genetically passed on, shared memory. There were studies done in the 20th century on flatworms that showed worms could access memories (to navigate mazes) of other worms by ingesting them, leading to the possibility that there is a physical/genetic component to memories. Weird and obscure. . . right up BSP’s alley.
