All the Love in the World Lyrics
Okay then.
First of all, from a producer's standpoint, the inclusion and placement of this song is brilliant. Before the album came out, most people had heard "The Hand That Feeds," "Only," and "Every Day is Exactly the Same." They expected the album to contain mostly rock-influenced drum beats, fun breakdowns, driving synths, and so on... So by including this as the first song, it's a huge attention-grabber that is amazingly effective. Now. Onto the song meaning.
Obviously, as with pretty much all NIN songs, everyone's interpretation of the song is based on their own circumstances, in my opinion... (That said, this is a great album to feel sorry for yourself to, but that's beside the point.) So for me, it looks like this:
There's a girl. And he's got this weird obsession-attraction thing with her, but she hardly notices him. He's shut himself down to everything else but her... and she gives her love to someone else. A rival.
So he sinks down into this pit, where finally he can only think of her... and of the blasted rival, who doesn't even really deserve her love.
He addresses the rival: "Why do you get all the love in the world?" Rather, why does the rival get all the love in the world [that matters]?
Watching all the insects ... where they belong - The insects (everyone else in the world, that doesn't matter) know exactly what they're doing; they have no idea.
All the jagged edges disappear - Classic denial. When he can't get her to notice him, he tries to pretend he's okay with it. But we all know he's not.
And that great pickup at 3 minutes and some? That's the part where he realizes his anger about the whole thing, and realizes that it's okay to feel that. So by the end of the song, he's screaming, demanding. Not asking, like before.
Ugh. That's just what I get out of it.
Great song.
This song's about desiring to be loved. He feels alienated from the rest of society, but is actually a good-hearted person, yet the whole of society still gets the love of the world. He is in a state of despair over this fact, because he feels like he deserves to be loved and doesn't understand why he isn't. It's just a sad song with a lot of feeling in it. Any "loner" or hermit would relate to this entirely, as do I.
It's about a deeply depressed individual who is in love with someone who doesn't love him back. "All the jagged edges disappear" when she's around; the "colors are all brighter". When she breaks his heart, inevitably, he wonders in despair and fustration why she, or anyone, might "get all the love in the world"-- except for him. I know this because I just lived through this. Kindness to others is the only way out.
i loved it right away also
and um basically i think its about being alone, and not loved or understood lol pretty obvious
IMO this song is trent talking to himself. I think he's sort of left his body and is looking down at himself at a nin show. The people are like insects and from this trents point of view he looks just like any other person cept he's on stage, alone. well not alone but you know. He's saying how no one really understands him cos he can't put his thoughts into words suitable enough to portray what he's thinking but he acknowledges he has a second chance after his addictions etc ("I've become a million miles away") He then questions why so many people "love" him or admire him when he looks just like one of them. He gets all this love and such but still he's all alone. or at least lonely.
Anyway ye i think this song is basically him questioning his success and/or affect on his fans. just what i think though. lol
and i think with_teeth is a different album to other nin titles. it's not trent sellin out or w.e it's just a different album. sometimes i like it sometimes i dont depends on my mood, same with tds and phm.
It's about fake people. The type of people that get everything handed to them and we with the dreams and goals in life, the drive to keep living, are stuck while we get what's left over.
My interperetation of this song is that "why do you get all the love in the world?" is a question that he is directing towards himself. Lines 1-8 talk of how fucked up he has become, and the next verse talks of the stars in the sky (like being a star=famous) and how he has become lonely, a world away in essense. He wants to know why he gets any love from anyone being who he is. (Only an opinoin. Probably not right.)
I think this is like a mental battle with trent's old self, and he hates his old self for getting all the love that he feels he deserves now. Excellent song writing as always.
Trent is a split person when it comes to himself and his music, he's always dealing with the dual persona.
I think that he's talking about himself as a music artist rather than a person. In the end he's sitting there thinking about his music, most of his songs carry a theme of isolation.
Everyday is exactly the same- (Self explanatory) Only- There is no YOU there is only ME Something i can never have-I'm down to just one thing, i'm starting to scare myself The Void-Try to save myself by myself keeps slipping away
And there are some songs that deal with "somebody" else (love) that he could be talking to through the lyrics.
The Becoming-Annie hold a little tighter, i might, might just, might Slip away Sunspots-She turns me on she makes it real
So i think it's about a relationship gone wrong and trent dealing with himself and his dual persona and a bit of drug abuse.
Why do you get all the love in the world- "Talking to himself" Colors all are brighter when you're near-"Relationship" All the jagged edges disappear-"Drug abuse"
this song is great. probably one of the better songs on the album IMO.
