The whole album is a sort of anthropological perspective.. like how an "Alien" would view humans and their habits... ITS NOT ABOUT ABORTION.
This song is shedding light on what love actually is- a biological process with the purpose of advancing the human species.
Love is what causes males and females to attempt to find a lifetime mate, raising offspring together. This is because humans who are raised in this arental dynamic are -generally- at an advantage against humans raised with an unstable parental situation.
Being in love is simply a set of chemical reactions that takes place in the body and brain which causes people to become addicted to the pheremones of their lover(well-documented scientific fact). This chemical bond also exists between parents and children, siblings.
The song is pointing out that while we interpret love as this mystical, beautiful thing that makes human special, in reality love is only an evolutionary device designed to produce offspring who will be well-adjusted and successful in society.

I think it's more about how you can approach the idea of love when you don't know it or you've never felt it, like "what is this thing that humans feel and talk about constantly that leads their life ?". However, if you're talking about what is actually love and not about what statements this song is making/proposing about love, I deeply disagree about your vision. That's how I viewed love for a long time but progressively I understood it was completely...

That's how I viewed love for a long time but progressively I understood it was completely absurd. We keep on reducing things to their scientifical explanations but we forget that science, here biology, focuses on mecanisms, on how does it work chemically and ONLY chemically so it ignores on purpose other "scales". By reducting love to what you say you ignore everything else about it, as what sociology, psychology or even philosophy says/knows about it. To compare it, it would be like considering human beings but ignoring societies, countries or humanity. All these scales need the other ones to make sens, you can't separate them cause in the end it makes no sense (and I think that this intelectual mistake is what feeds nihilism nowadays). I don't know why but we always reduct things to what science says about it instead of using that knowledge by adding it to all what we already know. It's like closing one eye to see better or using only one hand when two are needed. English is not my native language, I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say here anyway, it's been hard to write it in english haha. Fuck, I would have loved explaining it in French ><.

I actually get a slightly different sense from this song altogether, less philosophical and more personal to the singer/story, but not necessarily to me. But I’d have to write that all out separately to explain what I mean and I doubt I’ll be doing it… interesting comments overall

Great song, actually my favorite "love" song. It seems to be a cynical view of love that sort of pokes fun at all the fools who make such a fuss and end up getting hurt over it. To the speaker, love is a false emotion, bred out of confusion and need for companionship, not the extreme, life changing thing that many see it as. Great musically too. I ironically love the drumming.

Seems to me this song is about an abusive relationship, be that one of people or a person and their habits. Either way, the person/habit has control over them. There inlies the paradox of needing: one may be needy but the giver is in control so they/it can do anything to you it wants...like destory you and still make you think you love it and need it.

I kinda agree with burbster, in that its about the negative aspects of loving someone, but I think theres more to it. Thortonreed pretty much nailed it.
I think this song, at its core, is attacking how we all tell ourselves that we feel. IE. We tell ourselves we love this person because of a, b and c, but really its an excuse for the liberties we take at their expense, an easy way to dodge our conscience every time we fuck up or whatever. Its a cynical rip at relationships, which are justified to themselves in the name of selfless love when its really about the selfish aversion of loneliness. People only realise this after considerable soul searching and then tend to ignore what they find lest it destroy them ("wait for the night to come...etc etc"). When Devin's talking about the paradox of needing, I think hes getting at the fact that love, this pure and 'right', emotion, is conceived of greed and fear.
Last point (before I put everyone to sleep with this rant), is that once you realise every emotion is fundamentally selfish, you trancend them. You know why you feel the way you do, and why others feel the way you do. IMO, this allows those not 'in the know' to be exploited ("oh what a feeding"). Last quick point, Devin points out that even though these people know whats going on, they still tend to be fucked over by their own emotions, and search for pure emotions. PS. Best song ever. Two of my close friends have seen SYL live and they are just as good. During the song, Devin (lead singer/voice), stops and goes.. LOVE IS... a eggroll? and then of course the crowds all "NO!" Love is... casaroll? NO LOVE IS CONTROL yes sir.
