God is My Friend Lyrics
I can see God on
a cloud in the sky
on top of the world
watching the world roll by
with a great big grin
and some good cocaine
Jesus by his side
in the pouring rain
cause I can believe
in the inbetween
what can't be said
and only seen
when you close your eyes
and open your heart
and everything you know
just falls apart
I can see God
in Italian shoes
with a beard and a gun
and a case of the blues
smoking a cigarette
drinking Coors Light
with teeth so white
they light up the night
cause I can believe
in the inbetween
what can't be said
and only seen
when you close your eyes
and open your heart
and everything you know
just falls apart
I can see God
on a big white bed
too much time on his hands
too much stuff in his head
hanging out doing
whatever comes round
hanging out
and getting down
cause I can believe
in the inbetween
what can't be said
and only seen
when you close your eyes
and open your heart
and everything you know
just falls apart
And I can believe
what can't be known for sure
the things that might be
the things that ever were
and still not know
a thing in the end
and still believe
that God is my friend
a cloud in the sky
on top of the world
watching the world roll by
with a great big grin
and some good cocaine
Jesus by his side
in the pouring rain
in the inbetween
what can't be said
and only seen
when you close your eyes
and open your heart
and everything you know
just falls apart
in Italian shoes
with a beard and a gun
and a case of the blues
smoking a cigarette
drinking Coors Light
with teeth so white
they light up the night
in the inbetween
what can't be said
and only seen
when you close your eyes
and open your heart
and everything you know
just falls apart
on a big white bed
too much time on his hands
too much stuff in his head
hanging out doing
whatever comes round
hanging out
and getting down
in the inbetween
what can't be said
and only seen
when you close your eyes
and open your heart
and everything you know
just falls apart
what can't be known for sure
the things that might be
the things that ever were
and still not know
a thing in the end
and still believe
that God is my friend

Specifically, I believe it's Bob Schneider's way of saying that him and God are alright and he doesn't necessarily have to go to church to keep it that way. Generally, I think Schneider's saying that everyone sees God in a different way -- that doesn't make them wrong or right, per se, it just means that if we believe our own way, we should be content to let other people believe in their own ways.
Overall, I think he sums it up nicely in the last stanza: "And I can believe what can't be known for sure the things that might be the things that ever were and still not know a thing in the end and still believe that God is my friend"
i can listen to this song on repeat for days at a time, but i can't really tell you why. i just love it
one part of me interprets this song as bob schneiders jab at religion, but another sees it as his way of coming to terms with how he sees god, which is clearly a unorthodox vision of him. maybe its some sort of combination of both, who knows?
I have heard Bob in concert go on about god. He comments about how god throws us on this earth, with competing religions that are all sure about their own veracity. God gives us no direct instruction and instead let's us try to filter the outrageous claims of pastors/rabbis/mullahs/Buddhas/scammers, etc. and wrestle with the decision. Of course, if we are wrong, it could mean eternal damnation in ever-lasting hellfire. Oh, and, by the way, god loves us.
I had to laugh at that, since the absurdity of it all has occurred to my pagan mind several times. I think Bob is too intelligent to actually believe in a classical god, as described by the religions of the earth. His god is probably just nature, or science.
The song is just a down to earth, really cool way that bob sees god. He's just some dude, the same as you and me, getting caught up in some questionable circumstances that you and me tend to find ourselves in. But overall just one of those cool dudes with interesting stories that everyone loves to hang out with. Maybe almost ironic, in that God is doing these "sins" that all of us try to rationalize. He's just another cool dude, that's all
