Farewell Ride Lyrics

Two white horses in a line
Carrying me to my burying ground

Some need diamonds, some need love
Some need cards, some need luck
Some need dollar bills lining their clothes
All I need is, all I need is

Two white horses in a line
Taking me for my farewell ride

Some may say this might be
Your last farewell ride

I don't see the face of kindness
I don't hear the mission bells
I don't smell the morning roses
All I see is, all I see is

Two white horses in a line
Carrying me to my burying ground

Some may say this might be
Your last farewell ride

I like the whole coke idea. By the way, who else thought this was the music from Breaking Bad when they first heard it?

I\'d wager it\'s a reference to cocaine. The term \'riding the white horse\' is a rather well-known allusion to cocaine use, and the fact that they\'re \"in a line\" adds to that assertion. He describes how some people need love, money, happiness, riches, yet he cares not, and is blind to everything in the world around him except \"two white horses in a line/taking me for my farewell ride,\" which sounds like death by overdose to me.

Hopefully it\'s not biographical :-/

definitely not autobiographical, anyway. i'm tending to agree. one of the best modern dirty blues songs i've ever heard.

Oh man, I like the coccaine theory but I always though it was him getting executed. You know, tied up on a horse, being led to the ole lynching tree, a mob behind him. If I were a music video director that's what I'd do.

Yeah, I have no clue what its about, just kind of a nice dark feeling (yeah I'm an AIC fan :)) thruout with cool sfx like your coffin is being carried around by horses. Just different, I like it a lot

"riding the white horse" plus the word "line" is an allusion to cocaine use, however, there's a strong allusion to death also..."farewell ride," "burying ground." The slow, trudging tempo of the song with the chains in the backround sounds to me like these "horses" have been taking him down a long lingering road. He also says "some MAY say/this MAY be your LAST farewell ride" as in, there have been other farewell rides. The way the song tapers off in the end, you can almost see him riding off into the distance, thinking it's going to be his last...but it just keeps going...

horse usually refers to heroin, not coke

@lilstacyQ I'm glad someone on here knows their drug references

Cover art for Farewell Ride lyrics by Beck

Either way, the reference to a drug makes sense. "some may say this might be your last farewell ride" That taking this drug, that he knows that something may happen and it could end his life.

That every time he does the drug that it takes him closer and closer to death. As his addiction grows he will soon die from too much.

another set of details i think adds to the meaning of the song is included in "I don't see the face of / kindness I don't hear the /mission bells I don't smell / the morning roses". these indicate the speaker is using the drugs as a means of escaping the misery that life brings him and the fact that he fails to appreciate the beautiful features of the world, such as friendly faces and roses. also, the reference to mission bells shows that he has given up on religion too.
