The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I kissed your lips and I tasted blood
I asked you what happened and you said theire'd been a fight
You said I've been fighting for your honor but you wouldn't understand
I said hold on your honor I'll get ice for your hand
Oh you been fighting for my honor and I don't understand
But hold on your honor I'll get ice for your hand
You said c'mon baby let's just make love
It's the only thing to make me better
You said come on let's just get you out of that sweater
I said I don't kiss losers and I don't kiss winners
And I don't fight for honor cause we all are born sinners
Gargle with peroxide
A steak for your eye
But I'm a vegetarian so it's a frozen pizza pie
You tell me that you care and you never do lie
And you fight for my honor but I just don't know why
Mary had a little lamb it's fleece was white as snow
You've got me and I'm just a common ho
But I know what I am and I know what I ain't
So don't get cut cause I still won't be no saint
Gargle with peroxide
A steak for your eye
But I'm a pizzatarian so it's a frozen pizza pie
You tell me that you love me and you never do lie
And you fight for my honor but I just don't know why
You fight for my honor and I don't understand
But hold on your honor I'll get ice for your hand

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
I love the opening lines of this song.
It's the quirky Regina we've come to love with an awesome rock backup. "Pizzatarian" lol
The prelude to this is cute too.
I love the prelude. Every time I hear the name "Regina" on TV or in a book or something, I always have to whisper, "Regiiiiiiina!!"
There is absolutely no vaslid reason why I should enjoy this song as much as I do. But I do. This is one of those albums I want to force down people's throats because it needs to be heard so much mor etahn it ever will.
hahaha "regginnaaa" i thought i was the only one!
nope, i do it too.
my fave part is the dunadunadunadunadunaaaaah.
yeeeah babbbeeeey.
every part of this song is awesome it's only in the past month or so that i've really got into regina's music and this is one of my favourites by far =]
I don't know... for some reason I don't particularly love this song like I do with most of-- okay scratch that, ALL-- of Regina's songs. Maybe just because it's just so different, I don't know?
But I do, loooove the prelude to it on Soviet Kitsch with the little boy whispering! And apparently, I'm not the only one. ;)
i love this song. I love it when she sings
'Gargle with peroxide A steak for your eye But I'm a vegetarian so it's a frozen pizza pie You tell me that you care and you never do lie And you fight for my honor but I just don't know why'
Regina really is a pure genius!
'I said I don't kiss losers and I don't kiss winners And I don't fight for honor cause we all are born sinners.'
the song is fairly self-explanatory. she's saying don't fight for my honour, i'm no saint. i am what they say i am and i know it and i freely admit it.
