The Slaughter Lyrics
I'll know her face a mile away
You'll be there in the slaughter
Freeing me when I'm cornered
Being arrested by the mind cops
They're the only ones worth changing what you do for
And I try to be in line
I guide my fate
And what it's good for there is no telling
It's blood
It's a flood
I'll know her face a mile away
She'll take me straight through that gate
Living there in a flower
You wouldn't have made it without her
Though she seems to stay in one place
She grows with your life
So cry for time
What's slow is fast at the same time
It comes to life
And if it dies
You'd never notice cause it
It slides as it climbs
I'll know her face a mile away
And I'll know my pain's a life away
Freeing me when I'm cornered
Being arrested by the mind cops
They're the only ones worth changing what you do for
And I try to be in line
I guide my fate
And what it's good for there is no telling
It's blood
It's a flood
She'll take me straight through that gate
You wouldn't have made it without her
Though she seems to stay in one place
She grows with your life
So cry for time
What's slow is fast at the same time
And if it dies
You'd never notice cause it
It slides as it climbs

it sounds like pearl jams song elderly woman behinde a counter in a small town. well the meaning of it not the actual song, but maye more stronger than pjs
interesting comparisson, I'll look into that. I just wanted to say that I probably listened to this son 3 times as much as the others on S.C.W.P. but I havent even considered what it might mean. I like listening to the song so much and experiencing the feelings and thoughts that accompany listening to it, I have yet to consider the meaning. - and I won't start now (maybe soon), but I'll play it some more tonight and just enjoy as always.
thats really sweet i think john would love that
this is my favorite john frusciante song, ever. i listened to it, and it just did something to me... i can't explain it at all. i don't listen to it a lot, because i don't want to not like it anymore. not like that would ever happen, but just in case. i think it's loosely about hope, destiny and just having something to get you through, maybe? but its so damn beautiful.
the part about the mind cops: referrence(sp?) to the book 1984??
the mind cops could be your concience too. "theyre the only ones worth changing what you do for" like the only reason to change what you do is to be true to yourself... what an amazing song
the slaughter is a song that fills you with happy memories of a young child and john didnt have the best of childhood and some of his images come through i tink this is right
I think that this face is about a common JF theme, death, but more specifcally it sounds like "her" is someone who will take him to the next life, like an angel or a spirit or whatever the hell you want her to be. "You'll be there in the slaughter" At the end of this life, "she'll take me through the gate"
Personally, i love the bit at the start where he effects the vocals, its just one of those songs which arouses emotions you cant name and never knew you had.....
Yeh it's like he meet this girl called siobhan in a chemistry lab during first year uni (somewhere in the southern hemisphere) and like sort of got along with her, but deep down he really liked her. But cause his friend said she wasn't hot he couldn't make eye contact with her in the last lecture, and thus it was over. Whatever spirtual link they had But then months later he sees her on the other side of uni, and like knows its her (a mile away) but can't do nothing bout it (the pain thing, shit I thought it said 'i'll know my pain's alive, not a mile away)
so much about that
I think this song is about re-incarnation. The "knowing her face a mile away" is a reference to the belief that after you die, you choose your parents. I think the "gate" isnt so much heaven but the gate back into the his next life.
just a thought.
