Message to my Girl Lyrics

I don't want to say I love you
That would give away too much
It's hip to be detached and precious
The only thing you feel is vicious

I don't wanna say I want you
Even though I want you so much
It's wrapped up in conversation
It's whispered in a hush
Though I'm frightened by the word
Think it's time that it was heard

No more empty self-possession
Vision swept under the mat
It's no new years resolution
It's more than that

And now I wake up happy
Warm in a lovers embrace
No one else can touch us
While we're in this place
So I'll sing it to the world
This simple message to my girl

No more empty self-possession
Vision swept under the mat
It's no new years resolution
It's more than that

Though I'm frightened by the word
Think it's time I made it heard
So I sing it to the world
Simple message to my girl

No more empty self-possession
Vision swept under the mat
It's no new years resolution
It's more than that

No there's nothing quite as real
As a touch of your sweet hand
I can't spend the rest of my life
Buried in the sand.

Let me try. It shouldn't be too complicated.

He thinks words can be corny and spoil the moment, but at the same time he needs his girl to understand how he feels, hence his hesitation.

At the end of the day, his message is really like a dream, a life he envisions, where real love can bloom. He just hopes she can pick up the meaning of his vision, which is too grand for words.

My Interpretation

I think the singer has some superficial objections to say \'I love you\' and other \'corny statements he first feels to \'hip\' for.\n\nBut as the pressure becomes higher he decides the time has come to tell his girl he loves her, and no longer cares as much for his earlier objections.\n\nFinally he is in a state in which he wants to sing it to the world, no matter what, no longer wants to bury his head in the sand, ignoring the drive to share his feelings.

My Interpretation

@kooswillem I agree with this, but do you see the irony in the fact that he doesn’t actually say the word he is frightened by?

So, does anyone know what this song means?

I think it means being afraid to confess your feelings to someone, but then decide no more waiting, and the outcome of that confession.
