The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I got you, that's all I want
I won't forget, that's a whole lot
I don't go out, now that you're in
Sometimes we shout, but that's no problem
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
Look at you, you're a pageant
You're everything, that I've imagined
Something's wrong, I feel uneasy
You show me, tell me you're not teasing
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
There's no doubt, not when I'm with you
When I'm without, I stay in my room
Where do you go, I get no answer
You're always out, it gets on my nerves
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes you can tell that I'm not lying
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
This song is 100% about the Insecurity of dating a prettier girl. There always that shadow of doubt in the back of your head.
great song!!
I've always thought the song was about a guy who is quite a loner who has a girlfriend who's a lot better then him and when he is at home without her he gets afraid mainly about if she will come back and who she is with.
That's my thoughts on the meaning don't hesitate to let me know if you agree/disagree with it
about a weird relationship. the girl is all he's got and he appears to be very possessive because he's afraid she will leave him. and she probably will...
Come to think about it, I think it really is about a possesive dude - wow! Split Enz surprise me everytime. How dark! GO KIWI ROCK!
This was one of the first songs Neil actually wrote, and you can tell already he was something special
Committment-phobia! A lot of material Neil Finn wrote between True Colours to the song, "Message to My Girl" (from Conflicting Emotions) pertaining to love matters seem to have that common thread: "If I stop/I could lose my way/But I'm ready for romance..." from "One Step Ahead" is a good example. BTW, "Message..." was a love song Neil wrote to his wife, Sharon Finn--which starts off with: "I don't want to say I love you..." Wonder how his wife thought when she 1st. heard this (grin).
lol, "I don't want to say I love you..." bit different for a love song.

As above, I Got You seems to be about a dysfunctional ? relationship, insecurity, dependence on a partner who is not committed to the writer.

Yes, dark and sad - at odds with the maximally catchy tune!
He's dating this girl who is super popular. He starts to get obsessed with her. She becomes everything to him.
The girl probably thinks he's creepy and something tells me it all happens in his own head.
hes trying to figure out why he gets so scared really possesive guy awesome song
i think this song is about a relationship and the girl is popular and the guy is too scared to show his emotions to her and she thinks that he is being weird and creepy.
