Freckles Lyrics
I brush against the freckles that I hate it so
but life goes on and I heave a little sigh for you
It's heavy, the love that I would share with you
then it dissolves like it was just a sugar cube
Now the little pain sitting in my heart
has shrunk in a bit, but it really does hurt me now
Those silly horoscopes
I guess I can't trust them after all
If we could get further away (Ooooh...)
I wonder what it would be like...
Yay!
I'd be so happy
inside my heart
All the memories I have are beautiful in my mind
But they don't feed the hunger deep inside my soul
and tonight I thought I'd be just sitting in my sorrow
and now I must wonder why
What did really mean to you
I just can't see it anymore
I just can't see it anymore.....
O-O-o-o-o-o-o.....!

well, i don't know exactly what this song means, i like this song a lot, i just like the part that says "all the memories that i have are beautiful in my mind" i think that that part is pretty deep, but it's just a catchy song, might not even have meaning, though i'm sure it does
I really like this song, too. I remember it from a while back when Rorouni Kenshin used to be on Cartoon Network [hey, is it still on now?]
Anyways...all my friends and I used to sing it, in like 4th grade...But yeah, it was great =)
I like the whole 'freckles' and 'sugar cube' association...it sounds "cute" in a way =P
Like most pop songs, this one is no different in its being simple. The lyrics are not very deep, but the meaning is a little more complicated than most. To me it seems she read her horoscope, telling her she'd find love. She obviously did, and it may have been going really well, but ended, despite the horoscope saying it would last forever. She still dreams of what could have been, why he dumped her in the end. Must have been her freckles, the guy may not have liked them after all. I completely disagree, a girl who has freckles has something else to make her pretty. They just seem so rare these days, like freckles are out of style in genetic makeup. Just a little side comment.
it makes u wish u were gay
All I remember of this song is the awesome opening being ruined by the lyrics.
hmm i have a different interpretation of this song.. which makes more sense for the rurouni kenshin anime
the person (can be a girl or a guy, not necessarily a girl just because the singer is a girl) checked his/her horoscope and stated that he/she will meet his/her love one. Apparently he/she did, but the love they had did not last. It was a beautiful one but still hurts him when he/she remembers it, and wondered what it liked if they had managed to continue with their relationship. He/She would have wanted to be with him/her and get further away.
He/she spent a lot of his/her life sitting in his/her own sorrow but He/she but realized he/she had to move on because his/her sorrow cannot feed his/her hungry stomach. When he/she went on. he/she discovered on a new life and somehow the pain he/she had for his/her previous loved one is not that visible compared before.
That matches too with Rurouni Kenshin referring to Kenshin and Tomoe, Kenshin's previous life, and his newly found love in Kaoru. ;)
I haven't watched the show. I only know about it because I saw (or should I say, HEARD) it in a 2-part video called "Top 20 worst cartoon opening theme songs", by the Mysterious Mr. Enter.
Now, don't get me wrong. I like Mr. Enter, and I do think he's a pretty intelligent critic, but I do think he was way too harsh on this song. Actually, I don't agree with his points at all regarding this theme song. Even if it was bad (which I think it's FAR FROM), putting it alongside Mr. Pickles' and Angela Anaconda's opening is just ridiculous.
I actually think this theme is pretty good! Yeah, the English main singer can be annoying, but she's not that bad, and she manages to give it an energetic delivery that, to be honest, I had to force myself to not cry while listening to it the first couple of times. And I actually think the "mismatched bluegrass" instrumentals help break up the tension of what is otherwise a pretty depressive song (which is by no means a negative aspect!).
However, as much as I'm willing to defend this song, there is a tiny little thing about it, a small detail that I just find infuriating. And it has to do with the show's title. More importantly, the REASON behind the show's title.
So, apparently the show is about a former soldier (who killed people on war) trying to live a peaceful life and move on from his past, but struggles with it because either:
A: He feels guilty for having killed people, even though it may or may not have been necessary to defend his nation, or B: People find him disgusting or repulsive for having killed people, or maybe are just afraid of him. Or maybe even: C: He may sometimes feel a desire to...go back to killing? I mean, having a lust for action and even danger is understandable, but feeling the need to KILL? I'd say that's messed up!
But it's not any of the above that bothers me. No, it's a tiny detail, and I'm probably making a thunderstorm on a water cup, but it bothers me that much. Apparently, the title "Freckles" is a metaphor for his old ways, which, according to a fan of the show, "you can try to hide, but it will never go away".
The theme song also mentions "brushing away those freckles", as in masking or hiding a part of you. But why brush them? Apparently, so whoever is singing could get with his or her loved one. Because said loved one would be...repulsed by his or her freckles...? I think you can start to see what I mean.
Sure, I may be reading too deep into it, but I can imagine some people may take that badly, like, thinking that freckles ARE actually repulsive. They may not even be offended, they may actually BELIEVE that freckles ARE factually repulsive!
I know, it's probably not what the show's creators or songwriters intended, but just the idea of someone taking that badly makes me afraid. But even further, I have an even simpler question:
Even if you are the world's shallowest asshole, and you 1. only care about your partner's physical appearance, and 2. You find freckles ugly (which NOT EVERYONE does!), do you seriously find freckles repulsive enough to justify ENDING A RELATIONSHIP and sending your partner into a fate of grief, suffering the pain of missing his or her loved one and wishing him or her back? It's not even that it's shallow, it's just...ridiculous! It's akin to refusing to buy a product because it's a nickle too expensive! It's like refusing a car because you don't like it's color! Again, even a shallow person wouldn't do this!
Still, it's otherwise a pretty good song, I gotta say. (2019-04-15, S's N 22-18).
@tales cal May I make it clear that I don't intend to offend anyone. I'm rather interested in openly discussing the meaning behind that word choice.

@tales cal HOLY SHIT, Did I get the main character's GENDER wrong? That's embarrassing!

Well, I only "know" that information from a fan who commented on that "Top 20" video. Said fan who didn't specify the main character's gender (which neither does the theme song specify), so PLEASE, forgive me if I got it wrong! Again, I only know this from a youtube comment which may not even be acurate. Who knows?
