hey dropkick rover you've got down the basics of this song. this song is about the boston police strike which occured in 1919. Officers wanted to form a union, in hearing of this Edwin Curtis (police commisioner) ammended Rule 35 of the departments Rules and Regulations by barring officers from creating a union. on August 26 and 29, 19 officers were on trial for breaking Rule 35, including the president of the union and other members. After the trials nearly 3/4 of the police force walked out in protest (1,117 of them). the officers were defeateed when Curtis hired a whole new force. heres the details: http://www.schrag.info/research/chap1.html -brown

I'm surprised that no one has wrote anything about this yet because the song is great. The way I see it (I don't know any actual details about what happened; just what I hear in the music) 19 men were fired from their jobs for violating a rule that prohibited unions in probably a factory (once again I'm not sure exactly what this is about). What the bosses figured was that they would make an example of these guys but instead the entire factory took to the streets in protest and the bosses called in the cops. I figure the cop part because of the "thin blue line" part in the song but once again I'm not entirely sure what event this is about so anyone who knows anything should post here and help me if I fucked it up.
oh and the thin blue line is basically the border, it denotes the final barrier between citizens and chaos; civilization and Hobbesian brutality.
