Heather Rhodes Lyrics
There will be no tragedies
Your lullabies they are sounding like sirens now
Just like heather rhodes when she was 17 years old
Put another cigarette out in the square of my back
Memories might last for years
And birthday cakes they always taste like that
This isn't an insult to your intelligence
We both already know how you feel about that
This isn't an invite, this isn't anything at all
Except for the fact that you're here and I'm gone
Saw someone today who looked exactly like you
It's funny how the years go by
Saw someone today who looked exactly like you
It's funny how the years go by
Your lullabies they are sounding like sirens now
Just like heather rhodes when she was 17 years old
Put another cigarette out in the square of my back
Memories might last for years
And birthday cakes they always taste like that
We both already know how you feel about that
This isn't an invite, this isn't anything at all
Except for the fact that you're here and I'm gone
It's funny how the years go by
Saw someone today who looked exactly like you
It's funny how the years go by

Hmmm. For those looking for truth about the meaning of Mat's songs...look no further. I have been hanging out in the shadows and staying out of the way, until recently. I am, in fact, the Heather Rhodes...Mat mentions throughout the first two records. I'll be happy to answer any questions one might have about that era in our lives that has been so elusive until now. Feel free to email me @ hmiller0413@hotmail.com.

I love the hypnotic riff...it's like the blankness in your eyes when your revisiting memories, so easy to just fall into and become all dazed by the past.
"Saw someone today who looked exactly like you."
Now I'm aware of the clear literal interpretation of this line; leaving, or being left by someone, missing someone, and seeing their face everywhere. (Maybe in places you don't want to see them). The feeling in (around, really) your heart, how it stutters and floats in your chest. That meaning reminds me of seeing you at college, after I said I couldn't see you anymore. I was messing with my iPod while walking through the crowd of students, glanced up to check I wasn't about to walk into anything, saw your face, glued my eyes back to the screen. It couldn't be you. I pretended not to see you. Walked until I could see you were stopped in the middle of the stream of people. and I looked at you.
I prefer the other interpretation. Slightly more abstract. It's seeing someone you know, who IS the person, but who has changed, someone different to how you remember. The only thing similar about them now is that they still look the same. But if you see the person every day (even every few days) then surely you'd notice a change - no great change can be that sudden. A gradual change isn't noticed. Something has to make you realise, and snap back.
"There was a correction, a moment of nothing, and then a loose and sudden rush, back into the real world"
