A Matter of Feeling Lyrics
How do you feel when everyone surrounds you
How do you deal
When crowds just make you feel lonely
What do you say when people go
And try to pin you down.
Acquaintances smile but there's no understanding
How after awhile you keep falling off
The same mountain.
Try to explain it, nothing really gets them that high.
Steal away in the morning
Love's already history to you.
It's a habit you're forming
This body's desperate for something new.
Just a matter of feeling
This moment's madness sure to pass.
And tears will dry as you're leaving
Who knows
You might find something to last.
Emotion's a game saved up for a rainy Monday
But you laugh just the same
Cause it's been pouring on Sunday
Dial up your numbers
Never let the zeros bring you down.
How do you feel
Is time too heavy to hold?
Whatever you decide
For the moment is holy
Whenever you slow down
To see life is passing by.
Steal away in the morning
Love's already history to you.
It's a habit you're forming
This body's desperate for something new.
Just a matter of feeling
This moment's madness sure to pass.
And tears will dry as you're leaving
Who knows
You might find something to last.
You can
Steal away in the morning
Love's already history to you.
It's a habit you're forming
This body's desperate for something new.
Just a matter of feeling
This moment's madness sure to pass.
And tears will dry as you're leaving
Who knows
You might find something to last.
A matter of feeling
A matter of feeling
When it comes you'll steal away
Matter of feeling
When it comes you're still away
Matter of feeling
Your tears run dry

I have a different view to the others, I think the song is all about someone who desperately wants to be with someone - to find a partner. They want it so much that they feel somewhat alienated - even at parties where people try to "pin you down". By pinning you down they want to know "who the other half is"? They smile along even though you tell them you're still "just looking" (falling off the same mountain).
The person in the song (I call them "you") have started to mistake one night stands with love - "Steal away in the morning" (get up and go after a bit of rough and tumble, in the early morning light sort of thing) "Love's already history to you" (what seemed like love last night after a few drinks is actually nothing like love - it's only a few hours ago and it's history already. "It's a habit you're forming" - this is becoming the norm rather than the exception, the one night stands.
The line about "this body's desperate for something new" - means you think the next best thing is just around the corner and you keep trying (sleeping around) looking for it. "Tears will dry as you're leaving" - you'll get over it as quick as the other times, but "who knows, you might find something to last".
Some of Duran Duran's songs are impossible to interpret but this is a classic that begs interpretation - this is just mine. I spent many many hours listening to this one during my final school year (graduation year) exams. See what you think of my other interpretations on Duran's songs...

@bippy This is how I have interpreted it since the album first came out. But as I age, the conundrum in the second verse seems more intense. LeBon is a spectacular and underrated lyricist.

I don't care much for the tune but I like the lyrics. I think this is a reply to the question they kept getting asked, about whether they were just trying to gain credibility or not. And I think the song is saying that no, they're not seeking credibility, it's just what they need to do.
I love the way this song makes me feel. The last few months have been rough for me and it's almost as if these lyrics are aimed directly at me, telling me "it's gonna turn out ok"
This song is about the pressures of a relationship ending. How it feels when you begin to cheat because you are in a rut, and crave the energy of new relationships. It's also about the hangups over the financial fall out. In the end...your tears run dry and live goes on.
I think its about a famous person who is trying not to feel lonely by medicating him self with addictive stuff, (drugs, sex ect.) But if he stops himself feeling lonely, he's also stopping himself from feeling anything else that's real.
In the Strange Behaviour Tour Simon use to dedicate this song to Roger Taylor.
