Metal Heart Lyrics
I wish I had a metal heart
I could cross the line
I wish that I was half as good
As you think I am
But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt, and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
Wish I was as big as you
You'd have to tell the truth
I'd be nothing you could hurt
Nothing you could use
But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt, and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
The world is round?
I want to be dependable, I want to be courageous and good
I want to be faithful so that I can be heroic and true
I want to be a friend you can rely on, you can lean on and trust
I want to understand so I can forgive and be willing to love
I wish I wasn't flesh and blood
I would not be scared
Of bullets built with me in mind
For then I could be saved
My sweet Lord, take care of me for I think I'm done
Kiss my mother on her cheek and lay my burden down
But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say
No one gets hurt, and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
The world is round?
The world is round?!
I could cross the line
I wish that I was half as good
As you think I am
No one gets hurt, and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round
You'd have to tell the truth
I'd be nothing you could hurt
Nothing you could use
No one gets hurt, and therefore nobody dies
You know it's hard to believe anything that you hear
They say the world is round

I want to be faithful so that I can be heroic and true
I want to be a friend you can rely on, you can lean on and trust
I want to understand so I can forgive and be willing to love
I would not be scared
Of bullets built with me in mind

Saw Garbage play recently and Shirley introduced this song as a protest song about the war in Iraq and George W. (she also mentioned her disapointed with the United Kingdom adminstration for supporting the war).
The song is neat because it isn't heavy handed about what it is saying... it is basically just telling people to think for themselves and start questioning things you hear (i.e. the world is round?). If your government can lie so boldly and easily about killing so many civilians (and their culture), what else are you being lied to about? Don't take everything you hear as fact... news channels, media outlets, presidents... all have their own agendas. Western society has more access to information that ever before, but people need to learn how to sift through "facts" and find the truth. Don't be blinded by patriotism.
i sorta like this song... it's a bit different than most of the songs on 'Bleed Like Me' ... i really can't see any hidden meaning.... but yea.. after she says "the world is round" that part is AWESOMEEE :)
I Love this song, love Garbage and love Shirley Manson :D meaning.. welll 'metal heart' suggests not wanting to feel emotions.. sort of like wanting to be protected from hurt? "I want to de dependable, I want to be courageous and good" its saying she wants to be a better person.. ah i don't know! Great song though!
This song is obviously about the war in Iraq. It shows the emotions and feeling of a North-American soldier when he arrives there and realizes that all that was said about the war wasn't true: that a lot of people die there and that the government has been telling lies all the time. I love this song.
@glaistig It's obviously about the war in Iraq? What?

I agree with you. I had never really read the lyrics because the melody is so interesting that I didn't feel I had to understand it to love it, but now that I've realised what it's about, I like it more. It's a good thing that artists take position on that type of subject. The way it is expressed is very wise and poetic and the melody enhances this feeling. I mean, the subject "the media lies to you" is not really new, so it was hard to make something original, and they managed to do it yet. Of course, the song makes me think of the film by michael moore "farenheit 9/11". You may not have seen it, if you live in the States, but here in Europe it had quite a strong impact and a lot of people saw the film, which was a sharp criticism (very subjective) of the policy of the USA regarding the war in Iraq.
I wish I wasn't flesh and blood I would not be scared Of bullets built with me in mind For then I could be saved
that's my fave part!
This is a very good song. Probably my favourite from Bleed Like Me. Before I knew the meaning of this song, I thought it was about suicide/depression. Although, I am obsessed with suicide, so I would think that.
Really good song, sounds just like from their first album, which i like very much a sad song, when i listen to it, i feel helpless
This sing could be things going on in Iraq. Many lyrics in this song refers on that. "I wish I had a metal heart I could cross the line."
"But now that we know for sure they're telling lies when they say No one gets hurt, and therefore nobody dies."
"I wish I wasn't flesh and blood I would not be scared Of bullets built with me in mind."
This could be... wishing that would have metal heart, wouldn´t feel anything, example; death or loss.
this song is so true!
