Walking Away Lyrics

The sun goes down as the city lights
Pave their way through the darkest night
Raindrops fall as an old man cries
Never thought to ever think twice
Of all he had
Of all he lost
A selfish life, I guess, comes with the cost

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away

The same old street, just a different name
Same old house, just the family's changed
Picket fence, the windows stained
Freedom spelt by a man in chains
The silence is all we have to give
And the memories of a life I wish we'd lived

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away
From all that you made
That you lost or threw away
Trade it in for a brand new life
But I can't, can't let go
Can't turn around
Hold my head high and walk away

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away

Hey, remember me?
I remember you walking away

This song sounds to me like it's about his father leaving. I think it's from the son's POV.

"The sun goes down as the city lights Pave their way through the darkest night Raindrops fall as an old man cries Never thought to ever think twice Of all he had Of all he lost A selfish life, I guess, comes with the cost"

--This sets the scene and shows an old man remembering what he had (a family) and lost (by leaving). Whatever reasons he left for seem worthless now.

"Hey, remember me? I remember you walking away

Hey, remember me? I remember you walking away"

--This is like he's seeing his son again for the first time either he's asking the son if he remembers him-- to which the son answers 'i remember you walking away" or it's entirely the son, asking if the dad remembers him, because he remembers his father...walking away.

"Te same old street, just a different name Same old house, just the family's changed Picket fence, the windows stained Freedom spelt by a man in chains The silence is all we have to give And the memories of a life I wish we'd lived"

--This verse shows the home they used to live in, perhaps. And all the memories that house represents. It represents the life they didn't get to live.

Hey, remember me? I remember you walking away

Hey, remember me? I remember you walking away From all that you made That you lost or threw away Trade it in for a brand new life But I can't, can't let go Can't turn around Hold my head high and walk away

-- Here, the son can't forgive hs father for leaving, so he gives the old man a taste of his own medicine.

wow! you're a genius!!

I guess this song is about someone who cant move on from the life they used to have even though the most important person has gone

"I remember you walking away From all that you made That you lost or threw away Trade it in for a brand new life But I can't, can't let go"

I think he's asking them if they remember him to see if things meant as much to them as they did to him.

I guess the song is trying to say that theres no shame in remembering a time in your life and still trying to cling onto the happiness that you had but you should still, in some ways, let go

"Hold my head high and walk away"

The song is talking about life in general but I spose lots of people could relate it to past relationships

To me this song has been about a guy looking back on his life and remembering a girl walking out of it. He's either thinking that he'll still be in the same painful place when he's old or hes singing the song from the perspective of himself as an old man. I got that from the line

"...as an old man cries"

Then the guy is seeing all these people living in houses with families, happily living their lives and he envies them. The line

"Freedom spelt by a man in chains"

is the protagonist saying that he has freedom, yet he is imprisoned (chains) by his feelings.

"...the memories of a life I wish we'd lived"

The above live is saying that the protagonist wishes that he could have lived a life like the people in the houses with this girl, but he has nothing but silence.

The last bridge/verse is saying that the girl has moved on, but the protagonist is unable to. He can't just scrap up what dignity he has left and walk away, (even as an old man) the memories of this girl walking away from their relationship still pain him.

I guess it makes alot more sense looking at it the way that MuadDib did, but it makes more sense to me as it being a guy singing to a girl because it relates better to my own experiences.

At first listen, I considered it about two lovers, but MuadDib made a very good observation by considering the father-son relationship and explained it well.

To me, it reminds me of relationships that failed and one lover looking back and wondering what could've been (as shown by the description of the home and picket fence, etc, which they could have lived in). The "remember me, I remember you walking away" line shows that he is not over it and there is still remaining bitterness or sadness from the second party walking out on them. He doesn't have complete freedom because he is binded by this person (as shown in the freedom line), which again emphasizes the line that tells that he remembers the other person walking out.

Very heart-wrenching emotional song that reminds me of failed relationships, whether it be between family, friends, or lovers. Great song.

She lived near me... i walked pass her old house everyday... her bedroom window was in front of the house... so every time i walked by and look thru that window it brings back memories... i seen her once or twice in downtown years later... and i was tempted to ask her "hey! do you remember me? I remember you walking away!" lol but no we just walk right pass each other like strangers not even a hello... a silence is all we have to give i guess...

Jason Wade's dad left him when he was 11 or 12 years old. When I heard this song I knew it was about his dad. I love this band and can relate to them on the most profound level.
