Sugar, We're Goin Down Lyrics
Someone on one of the first few pages (I haven't read them all) said this was about an ex-girlfriend who told people that every song they wrote was about her. Using that premise, I can see how all the lyrics fit.
Am I more than you bargained for yet?
You started this battle but I'm going to raise it to a higher level. Is this what you had in mind?
I've been dying to tell you
Anything you want to hear
Because that's just who I am this week
You've told people I lied to you, telling you anything you wanted to hear just because I felt like it.
Lie in the grass
Next to the mausoleum
The grounds of a mausoleum are rarely well cared for. The grass is probably tall and uncut, just the kind of place where you'd find a snake. i.e. He's calling her a snake.
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
You tell people that I don't mean anything to you. I'm just a notch in your bedpost. Guess what, you're nothing but a line in my song.
Drop a heart and break a name
You're talking crap about us, trying to ruin our reputation.
We're always sleeping in
And sleeping for the wrong team
You've told people the band members are all lazy and don't do anything all day. Oh, and that we're gay.
We're going down, down
In an earlier round
And sugar, we're going down swinging
We had our time, our relationship ended early, but we're still taking swings at each other.
I'll be your number one with a bullet
I'm the number one thing in your life because you won't let it go.
A loaded God complex
Cock it and pull it
You think everything's about you. You're got a God complex and keep aiming it at us.
Is this more than you bargained for yet?
Is this song too much for you?
Oh, don't mind me
I'm watching you two from the closet
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
Isn't it messed up
How I'm just dying to be him?
This is sarcasm. She thinks she's all that and he'd do anything to be with her again.
(Take aim at myself)
(Take back what you said)
This war is both of our faults.
Am I more than you bargained for yet?
(This question holds the key to the song. This song is not about a boy and a girl, but a boy and another boy. One is evidently gay and coming onto - in a subtle way - another boy who may or may not be gay.)
I've been dying to tell you Anything you want to hear Because that's just who I am this week
(These three lines indicate the gay boy is trying to both impress his would be lover, yet still is trying to hide his desires since he isn't certain. The who I am this week indicates the lie he is portraying to stay close to the other)
Lie in the grass Next to the mausoleum
(They are experimenting with their sexuality and one can assume here that they are doing so in places where they cannot be discovered as gay curious. A mausoleum is in a graveyard and not a high traffic area)
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
(You're just experimenting and I am one of many that has bedded you - or been bedded by you)
But you're just a line in a song
(But this is more important to me than you, so I will trivialize this by making you nothing more than a line in a song I wrote)
Drop a heart and break a name
(These two lines have reversed verbs - probably more for the theatrics of lyrics than anything important - they mean break my heart and I will drop your name to everyone that we had sex)
We're always sleeping in And sleeping for the wrong team
(I think the sleeping in is a lyrical affect to make the lines rhythm come out right. Sleeping for the wrong team means we both are pretending to be who we are not, which is hetrosexuals)
We're going down, down In an earlier round
( going down in an earlier round means our affair is short lived)
And sugar, we're going down swinging
(Sugar here is a pet name and not indicating the sex of the one called sugar. Going down swinging means we are going to make a mess of this - or the singer is going to fight the break-up)
I'll be your number one with a bullet
(This line comes from the Top 100 song list. A number one is the number one song on the list. A song with a bullet is the arrowhead next to the title indicating if the song on the top 100 chart is going up or down. Here it is a metaphor meaning I'll be your number one partner as our relationship heads up - gets stronger)
A loaded God complex
(This is interesting and a clever use of symbolism. A God complex is a term used in the IT industry about computer nerds who think they know everything. But it also can spread out to any walk of life. These are the people who correct your every comment with "Well actually, it is not what you say but this."
What makes this such a clever line is the addition of loaded because he carries the metaphor over in the next few lines. Loaded - ready for sex - God Complex - because I will tell you who you are - correct your thinking - you are my gay lover and not straight at all)
Cock it and pull it
(Clearly a gun comment but metaphorically - and literally - this is about his genitals and what he wants done)
Is this more than you bargained for yet?
(Again - is my clinging more than you were ready for? Or is our relationship that I see as serious getting too complicated for you who think you are straight)
Oh, don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet
(Ignore me - a smart remark, self deprecating suggesting to trivialize me, and I am watching you perform by experimenting with another boy)
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
(This may be the best line in the song as far as a metaphor - I want to be the one that gets you off)
Isn't it messed up
(Aren't I a mess for feeling like I do?)
How I'm just dying to be him?
(I want to be the one you are sleeping with)
***Most of Fall Out Boy lyrics have an undertone of homosexuality. Pete Wentz is bi-sexual and even the name of the group could have a meaning.
Wentz is the lyricist and therefore litters his songs with double entendres. Thanks for the memories has the hook that continues to suggest he tastes sweeter than you.
However, since the song is about making certain you enjoy yourself - or let the good times roll - in case God never returns, the He could be God.
I see what you're saying.
I see what you're saying.
Am I more than you bargained for yet? I've been dying to tell you Anything you want to hear Because that's just who I am this week
(She used him to make another guy jealous, and is wondering if she ever thinks that he's the better guy. He'd be anyone she wanted him to be to get him back (even if he had to turn into the other guy))
Lie in the grass Next to the mausoleum I'm just a notch in your bedpost But you're just a line in a song
(It meant nothing to you, so I have to act like it meant nothing to me too)
Drop a heart and break a name We're always sleeping in And sleeping for the wrong team
We're going down, down In an earlier round And sugar, we're going down swinging
(We had a ball, at least we'll go out on a high)
I'll be your number one with a bullet A loaded gun complex Cock it and pull it
(He feels so stupid for falling for this girl when it meant nothing to her. "Loaded gun complex" Loaded gun on the brain? He feels so stupid he'd quite happilly "Cock it and pull it" to stop feeling so stupid)
Is this more than you bargained for yet? Oh, don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
(He's incredibly jealous, he just wants to be with her again)
Isn't it messed up How I'm just dying to be him?
(Self explanitary)
I think thats what it means. It's about jealousy because she used him to make another guy jealous, but he fell for her and now feels like a total idiot because of it.
To me, this song is written from the point of view of a boy who is in a platonic friendship with a girl but wants to be her boyfriend, but she's seeing someone else. Here's my analysis supporting this theory: "Am I more than you bargained for yet?" - Asking her if she is overwhelmed by his feelings. "I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear, 'Cuz that's just who I am this week" - Indicates he is willing to pretend he is not romantically interested in her to keep the friendship going - at least for now. "Lie in the grass, next to the mausoleum" - Probably referring to the random silly things they've done together as friends. "I'm just a notch in your bedpost, but you're just a line in a song" - This is a prediction of what might happen if they start dating and things go wrong (i.e., their friendship will disappear, and all that will be left will be bitter memories). "Drop a heart, break a name" - Refers to his feelings about her slowly destroying him by seeing another man. "We're always sleeping in, and we're sleeping for the wrong team" - He is "sleeping in" by waiting too long to tell her his feelings; she is "sleeping for the wrong team" by seeing another man. "We're going down, down in an earlier round" - He is failing faster than he thought he would. "And sugar, we're going down swinging" - To "go down swinging" means to keep fighting for something even though you know failure is imminent; therefore, he will keep trying to win her over even though he knows she doesn't feel the same way for him as he does for her. "I'll be your number one with a bullet" - An example of an extravagant promise he makes to her in an attempt to get her to love him. "A loaded God complex"- Here he seems to be doing a "sour grapes" type thing, telling himself she is stuck up (has a "God complex") and he wouldn't want her anyway. "Cock it and pull it" - Referring again to his feelings of death without her. "Is this more than you bargained for yet?" - Asking again if his feelings are more than she can bear. "Oh, don't mind me, I'm watching you two from the closet, wishing to be the friction in your jeans" - Asking her to not treat him any differently because of his newly revealed feelings, since he will only "watch" and think about her (wish to "be the friction in" her "jeans") not act on his feelings; another interpretation could be that the word "closet" indicates he has not yet opened up about his feelings to her. "Isn't it messed up, how I'm just dying to be him?" - Sounds as though he's lighteheartedly joking with her about his feelings, as if she knows and accepts them. "Take aim at myself, take back what you said" - Asking her to take back her frustration towards him if he admits it was weird to feel that way about her.
in reference to 'god complex' making no sense: a god complex deals with ego. to use that with "cock it and pull it" would be a reference to pushing buttons. so if everyone is right and this song is about jealousy, it makes perfect sense. essentially, it's saying "push my buttons, bruise my ego".
A person is who is said to have a "God complex", does not believe he is god, but acts so arrogantly that he might as well believe his is God or appointed to act by God. Some believe that "God complexes" are particularly common in arrogant, highly educated, worldly, or powerful people.

I don't quite understand some people. If you HATE a band so much, why does one come to a page about the band and try to trash them? You hate them yet you're paying a large amount of attention to them? Hmm, that's awful funny. You wonder why people defend them so vehemently, yet if someone came to one of your favorite band's site and trashed them, you would do the same thing. Anywho, I think this song is about being jealous of a lover who's moved on to someone else. Oh, by the way "Every things you said about me isn't true, your spelling is abismal" should read "Everything you've said about me isn't true, your spelling is abysmal" Don't try to correct someone's spelling if you can't use proper grammar OR spell the words you're trying to use.
Songs arent written to have one meaning. Sure the author writes it in a way to make his point to himself. However, just because a song means one thing to me and another to you were both not wrong. You cant be wrong when explaining and expressing what something means to you. The sooner everyone realizes that the easier it becomes to realize what the meaning of the song actually is. CAUSE THERE IS NO WRONG MEANING!
well to help clear things up for people i was researching about number one with a bullet and this is what i found. : : Just a guess.
: : At one time ( and maybe still to this day ) there would be a listing in Billboard Magazine of the top 500 singles of music.
: : If a particular song was quickly becoming a hit and was selling a good quantity of product the editors of Billboard would put a bullet icon in front of the listing to indicate a soon-to-be hit.
: : Once a song hit #1 then it lost it's bullet having achieved the top position.
: : A number one with a bullet really did not exist but it seems to mean the super best of the best.
: The bullet . mark before the listing indicated that the record had moved up significantly from the previous week. From #47 to #3, for example. (I don't recall how many places you had to rise to earn the bullet.) So it was (is?) possible to be both the best selling record (#1) and have risen dramatically (with a bullet) since the last publication.
Below is a link to the current Top 50 hits of today with bullets.

first of all god complex is a person who thinks they can accomplish things that is humanly impossible
To me, the song meaning is pretty simple:
It's about being into someone who doesn't feel the same, he knows he is making himself look an idiot chasing her; "Drop a heart, break a name" (and the moose ears in the music video) ,and he hates himself for it,"take back what you said, take aim at myself"
And it's all told from an over-emotional, teenage point of view!:
"we're always sleeping in and sleeping for the wrong team" "i'm watching you two from the closet" I think these two lines are deliberately written to provoke idea's that perhaps the song is about a gay love interest but they can actually just be taken to mean choosing to sleep with the wrong people; "sleeping for the wrong team" and being secretly jealous as in the expression "skeletons in the closet".
"lie in the grass next to the mausoleum"- well, laying next to loads of dead bodies to ponder how sad it is you're not liked as much back is pretty "emo"!
"that's just who i am this week"- i think this refers to the fickle nature of young people and their ever changing emotions
"a loaded god complex, cock it and pull it" lots of people say this is a suicidal reference and i guess that would correspond with my interpretation too.
