Thinking in Reverse Lyrics

Now that everything's in place, you're lining up the pins
And needles down the longest trail,
You've got the answer but it lasts
As long as you can smile but pretty soon your cheeks will hurt

I'm not trying to make things worse
But you're thinking in reverse
Now that everything is never too much...

Take the standard line and turn
It back upon itself to see what hurt is once you've felt
Cause we've been numb like corridors
And dry like tumbleweed,
This hospital's my favourite church...

And I got it alright..
To see what I can see is taking over me

Hmm...maybe about someone who is sort of thinking too much about stuff and thereby finding flaws about it. Maybe....i dunno

What the hell is the backwards part, that's what I want to know.

if its about illness i guess its how as soon that you are happy you find something wrong with it. that's why it last as long as the smile.

i can also see it relationship wise, where evntually you fall in the same pattern and you keep blaming each other. like where it feels like nothing is enuogh (where as once it felt as if you were doing "too much". but i'm going to assume it has more to do with illness. i dunno

I really don't know. i see the relationship part (my first thought) i agree it can also be about someone finding the negatives about everything...i also kind of see it as someone with a drug problem though the first stanza sounds like someone lining up his drug of choice (the fact that the lyrics include lining up make me think of coke more than anything else, but i suppose you can see "lining up" as also meaning planning the doeses for the day or evening) but that that the feeling the drug gives him (making him happy and thus smiling) won't last forever. the chorus could be something trying to get him to stop but he sees is as "thinking in reverse" because he's gone beyond what is "too much" drug wise so he technically thinks he's not making things worse for himself. or now that he's used to drugs stopping them would be worse. I'm not too sure about the last one cept for the numb part, as in you numb yourself with drugs so you don't have to feel anymore. Or perhaps the "hospital" is rehab and he is now suppose to feel when before all he did was numb it out.

I think the song is about letting your emotions control you too much. For example thinking that you have to be happy all the time is just going to make you unhappy. "As long as you can smile but pretty soon your cheeks will hurt"

This song seems to be about reliance on anti-depressants to keep one happy and smiling. I think Daniel is trying to say that that sort of happiness isn't true emotion, but a kind of chemically-induced numbness that masks hurt and pain. A "quick fix" if you will.

He has come to the realisation that relying on such drugs is actually "thinking in reverse"; and to be TRULY happy one has to risk feeling something - anything - even if the emotion is painful.
