Window Lyrics

I was staring out the window
The whole time he was talking to me
It was a filthy pane of glass
I couldn't get a clear view
As he went on and on
It wasn't the outside world I could see
Just the filthy pane
That I was lookin' through

So I had to break the window
It just had to be
Better that I break a window
Than him or her or me

I was never focused on just one thing
My eyes got fixed when my mind got soul
And they look like I'm concentrated
On a very clear view
But I'm as good as asleep
I bet you didn't know
Take the lot of it away if you do

So I had to break the window
It just had to be
Better that I break a window
Than him or her or me

So I had to break the window
It just had to be
Better that I break a window
Than him or her or me

It was the fact
Being back
Whatever's in front of me
Is coloring my view
So I can't see what I'm seein'
In fact
I only see what I'm lookin' through

I had to break the window
It just had to be
It was in my way
Better that I break a window
Than forget what I had to say

So again I've done the right thing
I was never worried about that
The answer's always been in clear view
But even when the window's clean
I still can't see for the fact
That when it's clean it's so clear
I can't tell what I'm lookin' through

So I had to break the window
It just had to be
Better that I break a window
Than him or her or me

I had to break the window
It just had to be
It was in my way
Better that I break a window
Than forget what I had to say

I had to break the window
It was in my way
Better that I break a window
Than forget what I had to say

I miss what I should see
Breakin' him or her
Or me

I think the window is a metaphor for her relationship with the man she's singing about. She feels that the relationship has insulated her from the outside world, made everything outside unclear. She needed to break it - to break up the relationship - in order to see the world clearly again. The "her" she refers to is probably a woman he was cheating with. The window was blocking her view of that cheating. "When it's clean it's so clear that I can't tell what I'm looking through" means that sometimes, she feels like she does perceive the outside world, but at those times, she doesn't feel like there's a relationship.

ok so i have a theory here, and bear with with me.. I honestly think that the window pane that she is refering to is a metaphor for actual pain..."As he went on and on, it wasnt the outside world I could see. Just the filthy pane that I was looking through..." among other parts if the song.... Id like some feedback, tell me what you think...

To me, it seems to be about illusions, or the loss of illusion. In the beginning, the line about 'as he went on and on, it wasn't the outside world I could see' seems to mean that the person is trying to convince her of something, influence her vision. Something is blocking her clear perception of the world or situation. She breaks the window to see the truth.

Yeah, I agree, there is obviously a deeper meaning to the window. I'm inclined to agree with lily, it has something to do with perception. The line "when it's clean it's os clear I can't tell what I'm lookin' through" was really stood out for me. I don't know if I really have an explanation for it. Maybe she is saying that even when everything seems fine she can still tell something is getting in the way of perceiving the world (or perhaps the person she is listening to).

i totally had that interpretation, that pane=pain.

like when you arent aware of your own depression, but you know somethings not right, yet dont believe in the conditions 'they' want to lay on you? you do it your own way, while still tyring to put forth the pretty picture 'they' want to see. but soon, you start to loose focus on your own self-change, and find your pain is delusional.

mmm, a stretch, eh?

I agree that the window in question is a metaphor, though I also kinda fun to interpret this one entirely literally. I'm not a violent person and could never envision inflicting harm on another human being, but there were times in my younger days when I did need to smash something because I clearly could not and would not smash the person whose behavior was tearing me up. I picture Fiona with a rock that she wants desperately to throw at this asshole, but she knows she can't, so the inanimate object bears the brunt of her fury. Viewed in that light, "So I had to break the window / it just had to be / it was in my way" strikes me as fairly brilliant dark comedy, and one of the best lyrics on an album that is not exactly deficient in that regard.

perception, point of view, realization, truth.

lyrics should be "my eyes got fixed when my mind got soft/It make look like I'm concentrated on a very clear view/...Because/The fact being that/Whatever's in front of me is coloring my view" Most definitely, as Js1 says, this song is about perception (perhaps also deception), point of view, the realization of this faulty perception, and finally seeing the truth. breaking the window=breaking the facade that hides the truth, because we all only see what we're looking through (aka our own perspective) but if we break out of that for a minute we may find we weren't seeing clearly.
