Please Please Please Lyrics
Please please please
No more melodies
They lack impact, they're petty
They've been made up already
Please please please
No more maladies
I'm so tired of crying
You'd think I was a siren
But me and everybody's on the sad same team
And you can hear our sad brain screaming
Give us something familiar
Something similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady
Steady going nowhere
Please please please
No apologies
At best they buy you time
Until you next step out of line
Please please please
No more remedies
My method is uncertain
It's a mess but it's working
And maybe if you tried it out
You won't like it when you're crying out
Give us something familiar
Something similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady, steady
Steady going nowhere
Please please please
No more melodies
They lack impact, they're petty
They've been made up already
Please please please
No more maladies
I'm so tired of crying
You'd think I was a siren
But me and everybody's on the sad same team and
You can hear our sad brain screaming
Give us something familiar
Something similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady, steady, steady, steady
Steady going nowhere
Please please please
No apologies
At best they buy you time
Until you next step out of line
Please please please
No more remedies
My method is uncertain
It's a mess but it's working
And maybe if you want to try it out
You won't like it when you're crying out
Give me something familiar
Somethin' similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady, steady
Steady going nowhere

ahh i get it now.
though for me its kind of mocking society... the chorus mostly... "Give us something familiar Something similar To what we know already That will keep us steady Steady, steady, steady, steady Steady going nowhere"
reminds me of people who are afraid of change, but feel trapped by routine. a little hypocritical, isnt it? but so is life.
love its truth.
You can picture the record execs trying to get her to make a hit by writing songs like some of her old stuff, which will of course, keep them steady (read: $$$$), but keep her stagnant as an artist, "going nowhere"... They don't want melodies, to prissy...no maladies, too down and depressing...just mainstream hit type songs...well, screw off a holes! Great stuff...
I have always interpreted the word "siren" much differently in the two lines that read:
I'm so tired of crying/ you'd think I was a siren
In Greek mythology, the Sirens were three dangerous bird-women, portrayed as seductresses who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. So Fiona may be stating here that some people assume that her songs are bound to cause disaster. This might be because they're not commercial enough for the recording company, but there are often situations in our own lives where people may assume the worst about our motives the instant we open our mouths.
In my opinion, this song is about depression disease ! Maybe it's not the real meaning (a lot of people talk about music industry....). Fiona Apple is begging "please please please" for "no more maladies". She's ''so tired of crying'', her ''brain is screaming'', but she realizes that actually, ''everybody's in the sad same team'' because this world is just exhaustingly depressing. However, she feels confortable in depression, she always wants ''something similar'' and ''familiar'' but it leads ''nowhere''. She's tired of doctors' ''remedies'' (antidepressants, anxiolytics and other meds), and she doesn't want ''no more remedies''. She finally found her ''method'', ''uncertain'' and messy but ''it's working''.
(I'm a french speaker, sorry for my mistakes and eventual misinterpreting ! That's how I feel the song and it helps me a lot. I hope it would help some other people !)
this song is so about the music industry. it's just brilliant/.

i love this, its like the ultimate "shut up" song, yeh i can see the idea of the music industry, especialy with, "me and everybody's on the sad same team..." bit. "I'm so tired of crying You'd think I was a siren" such a great line, full of exhaustion and emotion, lik it could be about anything to do with people just apologising but nothing happening about it in the long run... i can totally relate to this interms of friendships. brilliant song
The perfect song for those moments where you've basically given up and thought "wtf do you people want from me?" I heart this song.
I heard this song the other day on a college radio station, was enjoying it then I realized it was Fiona Apple. 'Tis a very cool song
yeah it does make sense to me now, the whole industry thing...a great song! my favourite line is
"Please please please No apologies At best they buy you time Until you next step out of line"
i dont really get that song much, but i think its very deep...to me, its like when u dont belong in the world, whose basically divided into two categories, the "happy category" and the"sad team" fionas talking abt
Love the sentiments of this song: it's the music industry, but it could just as well be a jab at the film industry (How's about Spiderman 62!!), and the entertainment industry in general. What's artistic and original gets snuffed out or burned at the stake. But when the occasional exception comes along and becomes successful, the world goes ga-ga and wonders why it's taken so long. Before we go pointing fingers, all the film/music industry etc are giving us is what WE want, when we vote with our pocket book. So look yourself in the mirror tonight - do YOU want the same old same old, or are you ready for some ADVENTURE!
