Get Him Back Lyrics
One man, he disappoint me
He give me the gouge and take my glee
Now every other man I see
Remind me of the one man who disappointed me
Wait til I get him back!
He won't have a back to scratch
Yeah, keep turning that chin
And you will see my face as I figure how to kill what I cannot catch
So I say and on I go
To another one who disappoint me so
The next one up: a contemptible snob!
He live to put things in their place
He did a commendable job
He put himself so low he can hardly even look me in the face
Wait til I get him back!
He won't have a back to scratch
Yeah, keep turning that chin
And you will see my face as I figure how to kill what I cannot catch
Oh, he make my blood just burn
I flipped so far I thought that I would not return
But the last one I had who was getting my hopes up
I might've been a little fast to dismiss
I think he let me down when he didn't disappoint me
He didn't always guess right but he usually got my gist
So wait til I get him back!
I'm gonna bring him home and I'll watch him unpack
He keep turning that chin
And you will see my face, it's fixed on the one I'm gonna get back
I'm gonna get him back
I am
I'm gonna get him back
I really am
I'm gonna get him back
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'm gonna-
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'm gonna-
I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna
He give me the gouge and take my glee
Now every other man I see
Remind me of the one man who disappointed me
He won't have a back to scratch
Yeah, keep turning that chin
And you will see my face as I figure how to kill what I cannot catch
To another one who disappoint me so
He live to put things in their place
He did a commendable job
He put himself so low he can hardly even look me in the face
He won't have a back to scratch
Yeah, keep turning that chin
And you will see my face as I figure how to kill what I cannot catch
I flipped so far I thought that I would not return
I might've been a little fast to dismiss
I think he let me down when he didn't disappoint me
He didn't always guess right but he usually got my gist
I'm gonna bring him home and I'll watch him unpack
He keep turning that chin
And you will see my face, it's fixed on the one I'm gonna get back
I am
I'm gonna get him back
I really am
I'm gonna get him back
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'm gonna-
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'm gonna-
I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna

I think it's about how when we are hurt by someone deeply one time, we carry it with us to every other relationship there afterwards--and even the ones that don't do anything wrong we end up punishing in some way with our emotional baggage, as if we're always trying to get back at that one person who disappointed and hurt us. the self-perpetuating problem of to have loved and lost and never fully recovered from it.
i like that she first uses "get him back" as 'get him' as in hurt him, and when she talks about the other guy she means "get him back" as in take him back as a lover. clever.
This song is one of many good ones on the album. I like how she talks first about 2 relationships she had in which she hates both the men involved. Then she goes on to talk about a third, in which her pre-concieved notions of how men act led her to let a good one get away, and shes going to get him back. It's a good message of not judging a book by its cover/giving everyone a chance.
Gosh, the drive in this song! I love it just for the venom.
Second verse=Fiona Apple's director boyfriend. "He lived to put things in their place...he did a commendable job." This makes sense. Magnolia is a great movie. Good cinematography.
hahaha im sorry but i find sonztwin's comment so funny! are u like a porn movies' director? dude seriously its got nothing to do with sex! and the oral part, haha its just funny!
love the bitterness!
I love the lyrics of this song, and how they are, what's the word, ah.
I'll explain instead
"He lived to put things in their place He did a commendable job He put himself so low he can hardly even look me in the face"
When not being taken literally "putting things in their place" usually means putting others down lower than you, because you think you're better then them, but then it says "He put himself so low he can hardly look me in the face". Which is the last thing you would expect from such a person. But then if you then take the more literal sense of puting things were they belong, it means his proper place was much lower than her. And if, his putting things in their place is a reference to a director, as some suggest it just adds more meaning to this part.
I also like that "I'm gonna get him back" in this song seems to both mean "I'm going to get my revenge" and "I'm going to get in a relationship with him again"
And I love this line "I think he let me down when he didn't disappoint me"
yes I think it's my favorite on the album
It's fucking fantastic. I agree with guixy, I love the venom in it. The way it chugs along & she spits out the lyrics with spite is great.
