The Man I Used to Be Lyrics
I was your daddy once
Wearing a sailor cap and dirty nails
to you I'm just a picture on your mother's mantlepiece
who chose to fight the good fight in time to fail
into battle
and in your shadow
your daddy loves you still
yes i do
I never thought it'd be so hard to see you grow so fast
and turn into the man I used to be
but I hope you have more sense than I in matters such as these
medals don't mean shit when a family is lost at sea
I save every moment I've reached out and almost touched you
but they all fade away must be a bad memory
Wearing a sailor cap and dirty nails
to you I'm just a picture on your mother's mantlepiece
who chose to fight the good fight in time to fail
and in your shadow
your daddy loves you still
yes i do
and turn into the man I used to be

I think it's about a sailor/soilder who died at sea, he then sings as a ghost to his son who is following in his footsteps, meh, i discovered this band a year ago and it feels like i'm the only person in my country who knows who they are lol, so i have noone to discuss them with.
Undertakerpt I agree, nobody knows who this band is other than us I guess. I like them. I actually heard of them from Nick Hexum. Anyways, I think you are right about how this guy was once a soldier. I think he may be looking down at his son from heaven. His son is about to go to war and abandon his family to fight for his country. But his Dad is looking down and saying that your family is more important. He thinks his son should stay with his family instead of fighting some lame war.
I love this song and I just recently found out about this band. That said, I do agree about the guy being a soldier. I think its more about a soldier who had a rocky relationship with his children. One of those divorced homes type of situation who didn't get to see his kids as often as he'd like. One who gets too caught up in his own life and doesn't slow down to think of the ramifications of his choices til its too late. He gets sent out to fight and before so he gets to see his kids and seeing them haunts him while away and all he can think of is how to go back to be a father to make things right for them since he's not quite sure they knew he did care for them, he just wasn't great at showing it.
@mobius 1 Jellyfish was an awesome band that didn't stick around too long. I love this song, and I think you're right. The narrator didn't die at sea, he just was away at sea due to his career and so missed seeing his children grow up. It's such a simple, powerful song.
