What Can I Do? Lyrics

What can I do
When the bird's got to die
What can I do
When she's too weak to fly
What can I do
When she's calling my name
She's crying
Mama, Help me to live
What can I do

An amazing song. Simply amazing, just like Antony and the Johnsons.

i dont understand why this is on the Antony and the Johnsons album when its pretty much all Rufus Wainwright with backing from Antony.

Great song though. I love Rufus Wainwrights voice

Maybe it's because Rufus wainwright just sings the song. Antony composed it (I suppose) Great song, and I just love it when Antony sings those backings.

Too good to be true.

I think it's "When she's crying my name," not "calling".

This is one of the sadest songs I've ever listen to. It just breaks my heart. Specially the two last lines. For me, it means the impotence of not be able to help somebody you love. In the last two heartbreaking lines, you find out the one who is desperate is a mom because of her son or daughter. Just amazing. y_y

'the impotence'..? heh, but I agree, it is about not being there for someone you love. Rufus and Antony both have gorgeous voices. I was stunned when I saw Rufus was on this song..

This song, lyrically, always stands out on the album to me. It's so direct. Really heartbreaking.

You all are terribly silly people. The whole album is about Candy Darling, a transgender icon, who died of lymphoma, it was a terrible, heartbreaking death, being dysphoric her whole life, hating her body, the place she was stuck in. She is the bird. She is also described as a bird in other songs, par exemple Bird Gerhl. Knowing the true meaning you can however interpret the song as you wish.

This song is about Candy Darling, just like every other song on I Am a Bird Now.
