The sun was barely coming up,
my heart was all but slowing down.
but I could barely make out the sound.
It was my personal symphony.
Striking the chords were only me.
There was a coursing through my veins.
Another chance to get away, oh.
Until this empty place is filled, I’ll keep pretending.
Hey! Wait! Knock me down, and I'll get up again.
Oh, pain a remedy that can erase your sting.
I’ll keep holding, and I’ll keep trying,
to feel this fight, and then slowly die,
and now look I feel painless.
These days and night blend into one,
but one more night is all I need.
Another chord for the symphony.
To float above the world for now,
to lose control is bliss somehow.
And bring the color from the grey,
another chance to get away, oh.
Until this empty place is filled, I’ll keep pretending.
Hey, the way you knock me down, and I get up again.
Oh, pain a remedy that can reach a sting.
I’ll keep holding, and I’ll keep trying,
to feel this fight, and then slowly die,
and now look I feel painless.
All these restless nights, have left me spinning out of control.
Is there’s not a cure for sorrow.
All these faded lights, have made me search for something more.
Will there be a new, tomorrow.
Until this empty place is filled, I’ll keep pretending.
Hey, the way you knock me down, and I get up again.
Oh, pain a remedy that can reach a sting.
I’ll keep holding, and I’ll keep trying tonight.

You guys are way off.
This song is about drug use, probably heroin.
Completely agreed...I was looking to see if anyone else said it.

I have a friend with a Heroin addiction problem and now these kinds of lyrics stand out to me, whereas I never would've realized what they were about before. It talks about the heart slowing down...veins...sting (needle)...and of course being painless because Heroin is a pain killer.

wow...i just recorded them playing this song in milwaukee last week and it has become my new favorite song. it was funny because they were like..."we have a song called, painless. Not to be confused with penis, which some of the people here have." i dont know why it was funny, but it was.
mae are geniuses.
This album could have been so much better (a lot of the songs aren't memorable, trail off and have no direction), but I really like this song.
These lyrics are WAAAAAY off, but this song is incredible. This is my #1 favorite song. Mae is fucking awesome, and I hope they become huge. This definitely rivals and surpasses Embers and Envelopes.
I love the crazy all over the place bouncy guitar on the chorus. They actually said penis on stage? That's interesting. So, first thing, he connects the words chord and night to mean the same things figuratively for this song, so that might unlock some stuff. The rest of this post will be BS, 'cause I still don't really get this song, but here goes. So, with the chord analogy, and his sorrowful symphony being made up of chords/nights, he's describing recent events, obstacles that keep getting in his way, knocking him down. This song is similar to Anything, because he's now painless and able to do anything, to do what he was trying to do, but kept getting blocked by the nights. If The Everglow is an album about conversion, "All these faded lights, have made me search for something more. Will there be a new, tomorrow?" might be the question that the central character is asking himself before getting saved, coming upon the everglow, if you will. Eh, I have no idea, take what you will from this. Peace out, I love this song.
This is one of my favorites lyrics from Mae. "And bring the color from the grey", is so...beautiful, hehe
One of my favorite song from the Everglow Album. I love listening to their songs.
One of only a few songs that I like off of The Everglow, but one of my favorite Mae songs period, nonetheless.
Upon my first impression, I thought that this song was about drinking, partying and just "escaping" and how that whole aspect just does not make you feel any satisfaction in the long run. Many people do these things to run from their problems. I think that maybe this is a song of the main character reflecting upon that.
"All these restless nights" the long partying nights with a chance to escape, but in the end giving no satisfaction or sense of fulfillment.
"Until this empty place is filled, I’ll keep pretendinge" The main character fills no fullfillment in his life, and drinking/drugs/partying he knows will not in the end give him that satisfaction, but for now they provide a temporary fix. . making him "Painless." if only temporarily.
I wasn't attached to this song, until the first time I listened to it after the death of a friend. When I heard "Until this empty place is filled, I'll keep pretending" [my favorite line] it really hit me and I could so identify with it. To me, this song meant continuing to live life even if it's painful. You may get knocked down, it may hurt, but if you feel like you can't go on, just pretend everything's going to be ok. And you'll find out it will.
