Butcher Lyrics

You're so handsome in this light, if only you'd reject me tonight
Darling there's no 'only way' when you come, please don't stay
We're so boring, we're so white. We've had too much 'so long'
Besides, what of freedom can I say when I smoke DuMaurier?

I'd learn to bend, learn to swerve
Learn to bend, learn to butcher

I could look wholesome in this light, brown and homely is lovely
Besides, where can we go wrong, we stray for nothing now.
So just once more fall for the stone, neglect the flesh to pursue the bone
Darling, beauty, daily bread

Say learn to bend, learn to swerve
(do it to make amends and do it over again)
Learn to bend, learn to butcher
Do it over

This is a classic case of the girl next door drawn to the bad boy. She knows he is bad for her but she cant resist. " You're so handsome in this light, if only you'd reject me tonight Darling there's no 'only way' when you come, please don't stay."

She is hoping for her sake that he rejects her, or just leaves her like a one night stand. It seems like she is always drawn to these types of men, the self-destructive type. I almost get the feel that she is co-dependendant, and that is why she appears to be drawn to thses types of people. The sadest part is that she realizes this pattern of trying to take home and fix these strays and the emotional wear and tear that it has on her. She is an emotional massichist " Learn to bend, learn to butcher ", who just cant stop.

I connect deeply with this son as I too suffer from co-dependancy and have struggled with being drawn to the broken Monroe's of the World. "

wow, I was so surprised that no one commented on this song. this song means so much to me, I love it. in my mind, it's about an abusive relationship - breaking a person until they become something they never were. all in all... amazing.

It reminded me of a girl who abuses herself to get the guy she loves to notice and care about her more and it works but now she can't stop the self harm. The abusive relationship thing makes sense too though. Either way this song is about abuse (of some sort) , love and devotion.

i think this song is about somebody who's tired of their relationship, bored 'if only you'd reject me' 'we're so boring, we're so white' and then she goes on to talk about freedom and of her hypocrisy etc

One highlight of this song is how it was written. Emily had the words and singing down, and James had the piano written instrumentally, and they just put it together. No active collaboration with the writing, and it just worked. Perfectly.

In a way I think this song could be somewhat sarcastic "If only you'd reject me tonight" this is her talking about after she'd been rejected and now she's just pretending she doesn't care even though she does.
