I must have sneezed
On knees I freeze
I mean I just choked up
Somehow I slept
I dream, I mean
I dreamt of nothing
Able to breathe a sweet relief
Now that you're here for me
A northern degree
Dove into me
Now I'm recovering

[Chorus]
I only want you to see
My favorite part of me,
And not my ugly side...
Not my ugly side.

Hook up a C.B. Wave a way
For conversation flow.
I'm shoved in your cage, to wage this rage,
Don't let me go.
A kick and a scream is all that seems
to mean a log thus far.
I won't let you on my stage, my page,
You can't know, yet you have to know.

[Chorus]

So calm, and now it's dark.
I look for you to light my heart.
I'm in between the moon and where you are.
I know, I can't be far

My ex suffers from drug addiction, and this song was my best friend going through all of the crap. Whenever I was mad at him, i'd listen to it, and just think "oh, it's the stupid other ugly side of him. I want his other side back." Now i'm on here, because he has been stuck with his ugly side for the past couple of weeks. I miss him. He isn't himself anymore. Awh Blue October, how I love you.

This is my favorite Blue October song... I cannot believe that these guys have gone unnoticed all these months... They will be huge eventually... He wrote and sang this song because he used to have a problem with drugs many years ago... He is now involved in a new relationship after going through successful rehab, and is torn between hiding his "ugly side" or letting her know his drug-related past...

I think this is one of their best songs, I can't believe no one's commented it in so long.

This song really helped me out after I let someone see my own ugly side. I can only hope no one has to see it again.

This song is so beautiful. The Answer and History for Sale are my two favorite albums of theirs. This band's lack of popularity is surprising, of course it's gone up since Foiled and their tour with Stephanie Meyer, but I must say I like them for being so amazing and obscure. You know, it makes meeting another fan so much more special. I could just talk for hours about this band. Haha I wish I had heard of them before Foiled though, I'd feel so much more special. xD But yeah, Into the Ocean was the first I heard of them on the radio years ago haha. Anyways, this song and Chameleon Boy are probably my favorite, well aside from The Answers. That songs is just like my life story half the time. All of their lyrics are so powerful though, however I'm disappointed with Approaching Normal. Ah well, at least I finally have a version of Kangaroo Cry. I love all the 5591 songs, I wish Justin would make a cd with just him singing his old songs. The Scar is so amazing, it makes me cry xD

    Song Meaning

DISCLAIMER I have just obtained a copy of Justin Furstenfeld's book Crazy Making. It's not very detailed, but it contains all the lyrics to all current (The Answers - Approaching Normal) Blue October songs, and his inspiration behind them. As I said, it's not very detailed, but it's his words on every Blue October song that is in the book. I know everyone interprets a song differently from everyone else, but having the original intent behind the song will be helpful to people who don't fully understand a song. Also, any grammatical errors are not made by me, I'm putting down Justin's words exactly how he writes them. So yea... enjoy :)

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
