I think this song is about how he's trying to see his ex-girlfriend, but something is stopping him, hence "there's strangers up ahead, holding up a knife trying to keep, trying to keep me away from you". All he wants is for his ex to see him but he can't because he's dead.

To me it seems this has some meaning with the story, but It really works before the story.
The song starts he is a wreck. He wants to see the girl he is in love with, possibly just broke up with or has another guy or something. People are trying to convince him to move on. Stop thinking about her. "Why do you give a shit" either refering to him asking the people why they care about his relationship with her. Or what did he say that made her take intrest? It seems like the storm before Car Underwater.
armor for sleep is sweet. i can relate to almost eveyrone of their sogns in one way or another
