You Take My Breath Away Lyrics

We are the people who's come here to play
I don't like it easy
I don't like the straight way
We're in the middle of something
We are here to stay
And we raise our heads for the colour red

I'm in the first row on your show, in the first row
On the First Floor Power show
Your vibrato's like vulnerable leaves,
You do it crazy, that's how you talk to me

We are the people who's come here to play
I don't like it easy
I don't like the straight way
We're in the middle of something
We are here to stay
And we raise our heads for the colour red

I heard you for the first time on the radion
When I was going somewhere in a car
You touched my heart, like a knife that's very sharp
Or like a bird, you just set free
That's just like me, when I hear you speak

We are the people who's come here to play
I don't like it easy
I don't like the straight way
We're in the middle of something
We are here to stay
And we raise our heads for the colour red

I like vanilla and I like sex
I ride the pony that I like best
I knew that there was something I missed
I was fifteen when I first got kissed, before I knew about the equality way
I wanted to get laid to "Take my breath away"

We are the people who's come here to play
I don't like it easy
I don't like the straight way
We're in the middle of something
We are here to stay
And we raise our heads for the colour red

We are the people who's come here to play
I don't like it easy
I don't like the straight way
We're in the middle of something
We are here to stay
And we raise our heads for the colour red

A duet with Jenny Wilson from the band First Floor Power (whose first EP was called "We Are The People", hence the chorus). So it's basically a little bit of mutual admiration between two great bands, and a testimony to the power of music.

It's about two collectivists of some kind (anarcho-syndicalists, socialists, communinists, etc) finding each other for their political beleifs (the color red). They bond after having gone through life not understanding why they didn't fit in with the individualist mindset.

The first verse is about a a nervous organizer speaking, and she sounds crazy because she talks to the audience the way she would talk to someone who already knew the basics of her political theory. The second is about being seperated (I think it was the first time on the radio for the woman, not the first time the other woman had heard her)but being encouraged because they were still both involved in activism. Before she found out about collectivism (the equality way) she didn't respect herself and didn't have the confidence to express herself or become close to people.

i don't see this. i mean besides a few words like "red" and "we" i don't think the rest fits

Thats the best meaning that i've read so far. it makes the most sense. :]

i also think that she's talking about being into the same sex "i knew there was something i missed" and "i don't like it the straight way" but i like thinking about it that way with the political meanings in it too.

Actually, first floor power...... was jenny wilson's band.... jenny is singing with karin

I think it’s a lesbian anthem. “Before I knew about the equality way”, “I don’t like the straight way”, these lyrics immediately jump out as containing LGBT themes to me.

“I ride the pony that I like best I knew I that there was something I missed I was fifteen when I first got kissed, before I knew about the equality way”

I mean come on, she rides the pony that she likes best, not the pony society likes her to. She knew there was something she was missing out on (being with women) she was fifteen when she got kissed, probably felt confused because she felt she was not enjoying kissing a boy like most girls do and this was before she knew about the “equality way”, AKA the ability to live as a gay woman.

My Interpretation

@falnichar This is 100% true from my perspective. Karin has come our as gay since and now is very vocal about it as Fever Ray. Jenny from First Floor Power is also known as being an activist for LGBTQ rights at a young age. I believe it talks about Karin's realizations with her sexuality and potentially having a crush on Jenny after seeing her at a FFP show after being on the front row listening to her. Jenny also sings in the second verse and in the background on this and talks about her touching her heart like a knife...

i think beer good is right.

maybe it's how they met? Jenny heard them on the radio and karin went to her concert? if that, it's an unusually literal song.

then i'm not sure how the 3rd verse plays into this idea. maybe it's fillers or to add ambiguity.

"We raise our heads for the colour red" also makes an appearance in "Parade."

And I agree with beer good; it's kind of feel-good. They reference "we are the people," "the knife," and at least one of the knife's songs (maybe the one jenny heard on the radio): "a bird".

Also, it's a very empowered song--it's got a strong, sexual, positive message for women. And, because it's titled after a "Queen" song, maybe it's a bit of a tribute to them as well.

I love the lines: Your vibrato's like vulnerable leaves I like vanilla and I like sex/I ride the pony that I like best
