Yeah he's saying that even though they broke up they will get back together. It's implied that he wants her more then she wants him when he says he will sweep her off her feet. It's a little bit aimless with the "one day"

I think that this song is about a couple that broke up for some reason. He didnt want to, but he knows that they were meant to be together forever. Once she said they would be together forever (like you said) And now he is saying that one day he'll be back on her street because somehow fate will have brought them back together. Even though they split up, they'll get back together just because they are meant to be together Great Song!

i don't think it's a "make up song"... it feels like they haven't been together yet. anyway, doesn't change anything.

it's beautifully simple (no bridge f.e.) but effective. a strange and sad way of believing. i listen to it at least 3 times a time. i can totally relive this feeling. great!

I like to think of it as being about a person you fell in love with but lost sight of before you had the chance to tell him/her, but you can't let go of the thought of meeting him/her once again, even if you don't know when or why, but you feel it just has to happen because you were meant to be and once the other person learned about your feelings he/she will return them.

I think it is more about someone you know you are going to be with but the timing is never quite right. He is saying one day he knows that their paths will finally cross and they can be together.

To me it seems as if it means the change in life from the young girl to being a woman. She isn't the same anymore. The scarlet lips meaning the breaking of her virginity. The "murder" symbolic for the change from the innocent girl to the fully flowered wild rose (the woman) she became. The rose he puts between her teeth being the love act. All beauty must die = all innocence gets lost and the sadness of no return. The river a symbol of the passing of live episodes with no return. I love this song, I love Nick Cave's ballads. To me they are open to any speculations and that is what makes the great artist.

This song is i think about a guy who is madly in love with this girl. So this girl rejected him due to some reasons and now they both are in their separate ways, disconnected from their choices. They girl gave him reasons why they cant be together but the guy still loves her. So this guy says "one day its gonna happen", meaning that she will fall for him, but he doesn't know when it'll happen. He doesn't know how to catch up with her or how to cross her mind. But this guy is optimistic enough to believe that "one day" when he'll be on her street( life) and she'll be swept off her feet! This man is confused and so in pain that he's asking for help that someone would make him a map to her street. This song is pure love! Love it!
