One for You Lyrics
Rumours telling me you are mourning
and you haven't slept for several days
you've been turning inside out looking for reasons
and your black sorry eyes made you pale
And you couldn't catch them
you couldn't be there
you couldn't help them at all
and it was cold
If we say there is something above the mountains
if we say that there is something we can't see
promise you will never believe me
cause I guess I'm just trying to make it easy
Everybody was lauging when they found us
one for you and one for me
then they let us go to hunt us down again
and still you refuse to see
why everything has to stay ugly
and you haven't slept for several days
you've been turning inside out looking for reasons
and your black sorry eyes made you pale
you couldn't be there
you couldn't help them at all
and it was cold
if we say that there is something we can't see
promise you will never believe me
cause I guess I'm just trying to make it easy
one for you and one for me
then they let us go to hunt us down again
and still you refuse to see
why everything has to stay ugly

i'm wondering if this song has anything to do with her experiences in the band honey is cool. there is a song called something above the mountains that has the lyrics "there is something above the mountains/ there is something that i can't see" so clearly that is a reference to that song. i think they broke up or went on an extended hiatus so it could maybe just be about getting over the break up and growing up and realizing some of her views have changed since then. at any rate i really like how she alludes to lyrics in other songs she has performed.
Thanks for this info; it adds a very important dimension.

First verse = I'm sorry for your loss
Second verse = It's not your fault
Third verse = Existentialist "God is dead" type of idea, that religion is a crutch. There is no afterlife.
Fourth verse = No idea.
This song comes right before "The Cop", which may or may not be a clue.
This song is the sex.
oh, it's more than the sex. giggle
I think it's about telling someone who is grieving about a death that there is no heaven "something above the mountains" and that people just say that to make death easier.
The last verse is tricky "and still you refuse to see/why everything has to stay ugly" maybe he/she still believes in the afterlife regardless?
I think it's about having faith in something or someone who tells you not to worry and "trust me", perhaps politicians or religious leaders, and then that person lets you down.
This song, I think, is speaking about a death and someone consoling the mourner as mentioned here a few times already.
I think it's sad though since I think the comforter is saying that as many times as "we" (the people consoling) try to comfort you don't believe what we say about a heaven or a God because we're just trying to make it easy and you'll hurt yourself more by trying to trick yourself into believing that there's some hope of further life for whoever died.
"If we say there is something above the mountains if we say that there is something we can't see promise you will never believe me cause I guess I'm just trying to make it easy"
This song kinda depresses me since that line completely goes against my personal views on death and a higher power, but I can see the reason for the lyric.
I don't know why this scenario comes to mind:
A relationship that has tried to make it work over and over again. despite multiple warnings about their inevitable break up...they still foolishly tried to make it work even at such a high emotional risk. "promise you will never believe me" I feel like one of them is saying " Please reject my attempts at reconciliation because I feel weak around you."
one of them is more realistic than the other and saying sorry but i told you so ?
