Little Willy Lyrics

North side, east side
Little Willy, Willy wears the crown
He's the king around town
Dancing, glancing
Willy drives them silly
With his star shoe shimmy shuffle down
Way past one and feeling all right
'Cause with little Willy round
They can last all night
Hey down, stay down, stay down down

'Cause little Willy, Willy won't go home
But you can't push Willy 'round
Willy won't go, try tellin' everybody but, oh no
Little Willy, Willy won't go home

Uptown, downtown
Little Willy, Willy drives them wild
With his run around style
Inside, outside
Willy sends them silly
With his star shine shimmy shuffle smile
Mama done chase Willy down through the hall
But laugh, Willy laugh, he don't care at all
Hey down, stay down, stay down, down

'Cause little Willy, Willy won't go home
But you can't push Willy 'round
Willy won't go, try tellin' everybody but, oh no
Little Willy, Willy won't go home

Little Willy, Willy won't
Willy won't, Willy won't
Little Willy, Willy won't
Willy won't, Willy won't
Little Willy, Willy won't
Willy won't, Willy won't
Little Willy, Willy won't
Willy won't, Willy won't

Little Willy, Willy won't go home
But you can't push Willy 'round
Willy won't go
Try tellin' everybody but, oh no
Little Willy, Willy won't go home

Little Willy, Willy won't go home
But you can't push Willy 'round
Willy won't go
Try tellin' everybody but, oh no
Little Willy, Willy won't go home

I might be totally wrong here, or maybe im just thinking really dirty, but could this song be about an erection that wont go away? I could cite some examples in the song but it would make me look really gay, try and look at it from that perspective

At the time this song was written, it was NOT written as a sex song. Body parts and sex acts (ex. brick house; pearl necklace; etc.) were inferred, but the 'talk' was not blatant. Radio stations would not have played such music "back in the day." I recall dancing to this song in the clubs and it was always fun. I thought it was about a guy who hung out at clubs to dance, like a John Travola type thing. (There was always a few in polyesther who were regulars trying to take girls home...and usually not scoring. More often than not they are our fathers' age and divorced:) This is a short, high energy song and perfect for the decade in which it originated.

Never thought this was double entendre, with such a childish and unflattering reference to the old Tyne Dock. I always had it down as an disguised uppers reference (Whizz/Billy) based on what was going round the Dance Halls around that time (especially the Northern Soul stuff). May well be wrong and I know there's some story about it being a stray Cat, but I honestly think it's about speed/phet.

I'd like to hear the background story on this song. Anyone?

The song was written for The Sweet who only sang on the track and was the first on which they showed off their new 'glam' image. It was classified as 'bubblegum' in the UK and criticised for it's 'nursery porn' lyrics. After the track was recorded the band rebelled and demanded the right to play on their next single. The writers (Chapman-Chinn) agreed but used the underlying tensions to create more great pop-rock.

Too freaking catchy. It just gets stuck in my head and stays there.

I work at a place where he host lots of wedding parties and has anyone else noticed this but this is a very very common song to play at weddings? Or is this just me.

I can definitely see sexual references, yeah to someone's "willy." Little willy could just be this stud who gets around, OR, yes, I mean this - it could be a metaphor for ALL guys who are going to be trying to get in every girl's pants. Mothers - you really can't do nothing - Little Willy's gonna get your daughter.

Many years ago (I am 48) I heard a radio DJ mention (before he played the song) that Little Willy was a stray cat that hung around the garage where the bandmembers first practiced. The garage was owned by parents of one of the band. The lyrics, in that context make sense. The Sweet sstarted out as a teeny bopper band with sweet, innocent songs. As they became famous and wealthy their songs were more jaded (read the ltrics to "Someone Else Will").
