Calendar Girl Lyrics
if I am lost for a day
try to find me,
but if i don't come back
then i won't look behind me.
all of the things i thought were so easy
just got harder and harder each day
december is darkest,
and june is the light.
but this empty bedroom won't make anything right.
and out on the landing
a friend i forgot to send home
who waits up for me all through the night.
chorus:
calendar girl, whos in love with the world
stay alive (x2)
i dreamed i was dying
as i so often do;
and when i awoke
i was sure it was true.
i ran to the window
threw my head to the sky,
and said whoever is up there, please don't let me die
i can't live forever.
i can't always be.
one day i'll be sand on the beach by the sea;
the pages keep turning, i'll mark off each day with a cross
and i'll laugh about all that we've lost.
2nd chorus:
calendar girl, who is lost to the world
stay alive (x2)
closing chorus:
January Febuary March April May, I'm alive
June July August September October, I'm alive
November December, yeah all through the winter
I'm alive (x2)
try to find me,
but if i don't come back
then i won't look behind me.
all of the things i thought were so easy
just got harder and harder each day
and june is the light.
but this empty bedroom won't make anything right.
and out on the landing
a friend i forgot to send home
who waits up for me all through the night.
calendar girl, whos in love with the world
stay alive (x2)
as i so often do;
and when i awoke
i was sure it was true.

After having come from a psych. hospital for overdosing (the second time), I listened to this song closely for the first time; it made me hopeful about living again.
i love this song. i think it's about how hard it is to keeping going each day, but you keep trying anyway. i feel like it's a reminder that despite all hardships, it's good to be alive, and that we must just get through and move ahead of the bad things and learn to laugh at our mistakes.
As someone who has dealt with serious depression, this song hits really close to home. My interpretation of this beautiful song: (I may have read into the lyrics a bit too far, but I love this song and have spent a lot of time with it.. Hope this might provide some insight for any other interested people out there.)
"All of the things that I thought were so easy Just got harder and harder each day" Even the little things, like waking up in the morning and going to work, have changed. The person in this 'story' (as I think of it) is struggling with to hold on to the things she used to have.
"But this empty bedroom won't make anything right And out on the landing A friend I forgot to send home Who waits up for me all through the night" The empty bedroom line shows that she wants to be alone, to leave everyone's concern behind and just be with her own thoughts- yet she knows deep down that any time she spends with herself won't help her sort anything out anyways. It shows a depth of hopelessness and despair that I think resonate throughout the entire song.
"Calendar girl Who's in love with the world" The girl is depressed, but it's not that she hates the world- when she "loves" it, she realizes all the beautiful things around her but believes that she can never really have a part of that.
"I dreamed I was dying As I so often do And when I awoke I was sure it was true I ran to the window Threw my head to the sky And said whoever is up there Please don't let me die" Regret and pain follow suicide attempts. There is a sense of realizing that you don't want to give up just yet. When she wakes up with this same realization, she turns to some higher power for help.
"The pages keep turning I'll mark off each day with a cross and I'll laugh about all that we've lost" I think this verse shows that the girl is hoping that time will heal her wounds. Eventually, she wants to be able to look upon this part of her life and laugh about it, to forget about the pain and move on.
I think the part where Amy sings about the months passing by is one of the best things about this piece. People who are depressed live day by day, and month by month. The girl is hoping that if she can just get through each month, holding on to what remains of her life, she'll make it through. Although the song has an underlying current of death, depression, and suicide, there's traces of hope (I'm alive, I'm alive") that make it even more sad and moving.
Sorry for the long post- hope you enjoyed it.
I think this is a song about a girl who's different. she feels totally alienated from the rest of humanity. I think she finds a lot of beauty in living, even though she's all alone. Her fear of being alone causes her to dream about dying and when she thinks about leaving the beauty of the world behind she can't stand the though. She loves the world, but is misunderstood.
i think it shows how she is separate from the world by the like: 'calendar girl, who is lost to the world' she's 'lost' to the world because they don't understand her.
i think the friend on the landing is her gaurdian or something like that. or someone who wants to get to know her, but can't.
The lines: 'all of the things I thought were so easy/just got harder and harder each day' illustrate how hard it is to be okay with being separate from everyone else to the point where it seemed really futile.
i think this song is really hopeful. it really made me feel connected with someone. i love this song.
Someone posted this on YouTube and I had to share it. It's amazing.
"I think Calendar Girl is about a girl or person who's lost and just passes the day without purpose and significance. It's somebody who's trying so hard in their soul-searching but they're frustrated, and they're constantly battling between death or living on. It's about dealing with depression. It's like you hate being alive, but you're not ready to die yet. Whereas everything else in your life is so dark and uncertain, the only thing thats keeping you up is knowing that there's hope in living."
the beauty of this song is the description of what it feels like to be dying - futility, and anger, and hopelessness, and all of the other things that those of us who have come so close to the end have experienced. whether it's about depression, or disease, or all the other things that kill us, it speaks to the idea that life is worth it, that our struggle in this world, while futile, still worth it.
"I'll mark off each day with a cross, and I'll laugh about all that we've lost."
another song that is capable of making me incredibly emotional.
Outstanding song about realizing the importance of life over any petty problems.
I think the whole message of this song is...
Life isn't short, and the relationships we have will last for years and years, and they could mean more than any petty problems that temporarily bring us down.
Yep. :)
I saw the Stars a little while ago and they played this song, it was amazing.
This song always makes me think about a girl that loves life and is happy but the weight of the world keeps increasing and making things harder for her.
