The People Lyrics
Not trying to catch your eye, not trying to touch your hand
Not trying to show you a part of me no one else can find
but i will bring a song to you, who will buy my time?
I am trying to tear myself away from your eyes
The people get philosophical and say there is no future
Nothing is as blinding as your eyes
No quenchless autumn breezes, late tomorrow skies
Are you frightened by the moment? I softly lie
Where I thought I would always be, I let myself get by
Get by
Need is always pending on how much you can get
Get on you now
THIS SONG IS THE GREATEST SONG BY METRIC. EVER. It's absolutely beautiful, and I cried the first time I heard it. Ahh, blue eyed beauties who break hearts... =(
"The people get philosophical and say there is no future, I am trying to tear myself away from your eyes. Nothing is as blinding as your eyes."
Wow. That's pretty much the theme song for my life. Anyways, amaziiiiing song. That's all I can say.
I love this song, enough said.
I love the line, "Need is always pending on how much you can get" I think that is really true in our world today. People are so materialistic. Human beings are the only species that take more then they need to survive. There is more then enough resources for the entire world, but yet 3/4 of the population is in poverty.
This is my favorite song right now and I can't take it off repeat so I thought I should write something about its meaning.
This is a love song of utter denial. She says she doesn't want all these things yet those are the things she wants the most. She denies wanting them in an attempt to abandon her feelings.
At first I thought that was all there was to this song. Someone hopelessly in love trying to convince themselves they arent. Then I took into consideration those last few lines.
"Not looking for an ending to make the pieces fit Need is always pending on how much you can get"
Those line make it seem more like she realizes it's over and shes just getting those final words out. Still has a bit of a love-sick tinge. If need is pending on how much you can get. I can't get you so I don't need you. Instead of being in this love she thought she needed she has resigned herself to just "get by" without it.
Personally the first stanza kind of describe how I react to most of the world. I'm always trying to understand people and get them to understand me I just won't admit to it.
Not looking for an ending to make the pieces fit Need is always pending on how much you can get
...
how much you can get
i think its so clever how they skipped a count (or watever you call it) after the line about need because it kind of tricks you into thinking you should start singing before she does, and then you do and then she starts singing a little later. i think the slightly longer pause makes those lines stand out so much more and makes it all that much more meaningful.
sorry, i just love that part :D
this song makes me think of fight club for some odd reason. this is probably my favorite metric song. it's so trendsetting, in a way.
