Be Somebody Lyrics

The shades go up
Mother's staring down
She don't know where he's been
Or how long he's been out
She said, "Boy, I'm tired of waiting up
While you're out with your friends"
He said, "Mom, I'm trying
And I'm living my life the best way that I can"

'Cause I'm trying to be somebody
I'm not trying to be somebody else
This life is mine I'm living
Don't you know me, I won't ever let you down

The days come
The son is moving on
She don't know where he'll go
Or when he's coming home
She said, "Son, take care
Don't let your dreams get too far out of sight"
He said, "I love you, now don't worry about me
You know I'll be fine"
'Cause I'm trying to be somebody
I'm not trying to be somebody else
This life is mine I'm living
Don't you know me, I won't ever let you

I'm not trying to be somebody else
(Don't you know me I won't ever let you,
I won't ever let you down)

What they say
What they know
What they think
Won't ever bring me down
This life is mine
And I am my own

I'm trying to be somebody
I'm not trying to be somebody else
This life is mine I lead
Don't you know me?

'Cause I'm trying to be somebody
I'm not trying to be somebody else
This life is mine I'm living
Don't you know me, I won't ever let you

I'm not trying to be somebody else
Don't you know me, I won't ever let you down
Oh Lord, I won't be nobody else
This life is mine
And I am my own

This song, of course, is about living your life, being you, and I think it has a bit to do with trust as well (("Don't you know me? I wont ever let you down")) Dunno why noone has commented on this song.. it's one of my favorites on this cd.

This song is right how I am just now. i'm leaving home in september to go to uni, and i'm feeling like I can't wait to get out, be my own person rather than who my parents want me to be. I'm pushing at the boundaries because I'm not a child any more - they need to trust me to make my own decisions and live my life 'the best way that i can'.

Personally, I look at it as taking risks, as well as deviating from a parents set plan. He's taking a risk to do what he wants to do, whether that is being a musician or whatever, and his mother is worried, but of course he wants to live life as he has planned.

Im sure they can do better, all of us here have heard and seen them, but the first time I heard this song it made me think about how the boy living his life and his mum does trust him shes just afraid for him, and he reassures her. "She said 'Son take care, don't let your dreams get too far out of sight' He said 'I love you now, don't worry about me you know i'll be fine'"

I just think this song is being who you want to be and its even better when your parents support you on that.

i put this song towards my mom who i will never be good enough for. she expects to much and isnt happy [even though she says she is] with the way i turned out.

i think it's about someone in his mid/late teens who wants to part from his parents to go and experience life as someone who isn't bound to his parents. they might disagree with what he's doing, or are afraid to let go, or that he migth disappoint them and not come back, but he's trying to assure them that he still loves them despite wanting to leave home.

"i'm trying to be somebody, i'm not trying to be somebody else" - i guess that means that he's also under peer pressure from all his friends who're the same age, they go out to parties and stuff, and he also wants to prove that he can "be somebody" and join them, even if his mother is kinda over-protective and doesn't want to accept that her son is growing up to live on his own.

i can relate to this song, cuz my mom's pretty much the type who can't let go.
