The World Inside My Head

I've recently fallen in love with this song, if anything it's just thw way it sounds, the way they sing it sighs so awesome. I think what this song is about is enjoying a moment for a bit too long, clinging onto something instead of moving on, almost like he went into a dreamworld for a while. This song talks about how he feels better when he paints his days with "purple seams and left out grays", basically he's living in his own little world. "Where did everybody go without me?" this is the attatchement to the real world, he's seeing that people have moved on and he's still just where he was when they left him still fantasizing (I'm sure I spelled that wrong). Alright I hope that came together alright, basically the song is about day dreaming, but on a larger scale... I think.

This song is talking about a man/woman who has found something (religion, perhaps) to believe in. All of his old friends and people he meets for the first time continually try to change him to their way of thinking "they're tryin to shoot down my plane of grace." Meanwhile, he's beginning to get weary of the trappings of "the one less traveled" and is starting to feel pressure to be like them. But he believes that people should be allowed to be who they are: "strange is just a different point of view."

I always thought it was "I feel better when I paint my days with purple SEAS and left-out greys" as opposed to the normal blue seas.. since the next line talks about "strange is just a different point of view." It's like he's saying dare to be different.. don't worry about what other people think if you do something outta-the-norm. :) At least that's what I get out of this song. I love it, and the message that it sends.

Have you ever heard the expression "Stop the train! I wanna get off!" It's about how life is always moving whether you like it or not. Well Ken Block did get off the train wrote this song when he fell into a lot of heavy drinking and drug use. He tries to be vague, but you can kind of see this when he begins the song talking about being on a path where he stumbles a bit.

That is just the introduction of this story though to give us a setting to work with. The true meaning comes out next when goes on to talk about how everyone else interrupts Ken's actions as if they know him. Other people being so high up there thinking they know better whispering behind his back, but he's not dumb. Ken knows how he's being viewed that way.

I found the repeated lyrics "But the paint on me is beginning to dry. And it's not what I wanted to be." to be very poetic in a sense. Or at least my interpretation of it anyway. This reiterates that everyone has painted their picture of him; the drying part to signify that it's being finalized. Of course, Ken doesn't want this to be his painted image. He even pushes at the end of the song that he wishes could paint his own image for them.

So that's the conflict he's working with. The rest of the song is a combination of sharing his feelings, and explaining his own person reasons for why he is where he is (Ken just needed a break from the world; he needed to be distracted and have a chance to dream). The whole message being that you can't get an accurate image of me unless you know the world inside my head and my own personal experiences, and the struggles that come with trying to portray these things before someone's mind is made up about an individual.
